DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Topic: Volume and Surface area
Year:9 DATE:9-5-2023
Group 1:
1) Each locker is shaped like a rectangular prism.
Which has more storage space? Explain

2 The diagram shows a cylindrical container used to serve coffee in a hotel.

The container has a height of 50cm and a radius of 18 cm.
Calculate the volume of the Cylinder.
(Volume of cylinder = ∏r2h)

Extended question:
The surface area of a cube is 150cm2.
a) Find the side of the cube

b) Calculate the volume of the cube.

Group 2:

1. A movie theatre designs two bags to hold 96 cubic inches of popcorn

Find the height of each bag.

2 A solid cylinder of height 10cm and radius 4cm

is to be plated with the material costing $ 11per cm2.
Find the cost of the plating.

Extended question:
A solid metal cuboid measures 10 cm by 6 cm by 3 cm.
Show that 16 of these solid metal cuboids will fit exactly
into a box which has internal measurements 40 cm by
12 cm by 6 cm.

Group 3:
1 A solid metal bar is in the shape of a cuboid of
length of 250 cm. The cross-section is a
square of side x cm. The volume of the cuboid is 4840 cm3.
(a) Show that x = 4.4.

(b) A box, in the shape of a cuboid measures 250 cm by 88 cm by h cm. 120 of the

metal bars fit exactly in the box. Calculate the value of h.

2 Find the total surface of the following half cylindrical solid.

Extended question:

(a) The diagram shows a rectangular tank of base 30 cm by 25 cm. It contains water to a
depth of 8 cm.
Calculate the volume of water in the tank.
(b) The diagram shows a cylinder of radius 10 cm and height 14 cm which is full of water.
(i) Calculate the volume of water in the cylinder.

(ii) All the water in the cylinder is poured into the rectangular
tank. Find the total volume of water now in the tank.

(ii) Calculate the new depth of water in the tank.

The diagram shows the cross-section of a pipe of length 50cm.

The inner diameter of the pipe is 20cm and the outer diameter is 30 cm.

a) Calculate the volume of metal needed to make the pipe. Round your answer to a
sensible level of accuracy.

b) Calculate the total surface area of the pipe , including the inside surface.
