EEN-301: Power System Analysis and Control

Tutorial-V

1. Three identical Y-connected resistors form a load bank with a three-phase rating of 2300
V and 500 kVA. If the load bank has applied voltages as
|V | 1840 V, |V | 2760 V, |V | 2300 𝑉

(a) Find the line voltages and currents in per unit in to the load. Assume that the neutral of
the load is not connected to the neutral of the system and select a base of 2300 V and
500 kVA.
(b) Using symmetrical components, calculate the power absorbed in the load and check the
answer.

2. The resistive Y-connected load bank of Problem 1 is supplied from the low-voltage Y-side
of a Y-∆ transformer. The voltages at the load are the same as in that problem. Find the line
voltages and currents in per unit on the high-voltage side of the transformer. (Hint: The
phase angle of positive-sequence voltage at high voltage side leads that at the low voltage
side by 30°. The phase angle of the negative-sequence voltage at low voltage side leads
that at the high voltage side by 30°.)

3. Two synchronous machines are connected through three-phase transformers to the

transmission line as shown in the figure below. The ratings and reactances of the machines,
transformers, and transmission line are:

Machines 1 and 2: 100 MVA , 20 kV, X” X X 20%, X 4%, X 5%

Transformers T1 and T2: 100 MVA, 20/345 kV, X 8% (both ends are solidly grounded)
Transmission line: X X 15%, and X 50% (on 100 MVA, 345 kV base).

Draw the three sequence networks and find the three sequence bus impedance matrices.
Further, the system is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when a bolted
(𝐙 0) single line-to-ground fault occurs on phase A at bus 3. Determine the following:
(a) Sub-transient current to ground at the fault in all three phases,
(b) Current contribution from machines 1 and 2 in all three phases,
(c) Current flow through Transformers T1 and T2 in all three phases
(d) Line-to-ground voltages at all buses.

4. Two synchronous machines are connected through three-phase transformers to the

transmission line as shown in the figure below. The ratings and reactances of the machines,
transformers, and transmission line are:

Machines 1 and 2 : 100 MVA , 20 kV, X” X X 20%, X 4%, X 5%

Transformers T1 and T2 : 100 MVA, 20 ∆/345 Y kV, X 8% (Y-side solidly grounded)
Transmission line: X X 15%, and X 50% (on 100 MVA, 345 kV base).

Draw the three sequence networks and find the three sequence bus impedance matrices.
Further, the system is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when a bolted
single line-to-ground fault occurs on phase A at bus 3. Determine the following:
(a) Sub-transient current to ground at the fault in all three phases,
(b) Current contribution from machines 1 and 2 in all three phases,
(c) Current flow through Transformers T1 and T2 in all three phases
(d) Line-to-ground voltages at all buses.

5. The system as in problem 3 is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when
a bolted line-to-line fault involving phase B and C occurs at bus 3. Determine the following:
(a) Sub-transient current to ground at the fault in all three phases,
(b) Current contribution from machines 1 and 2 in all three phases,
(c) Current flow through Transformers T1 and T2 in all three phases
(d) Line-to-ground voltages at all buses.

6. The system as in problem 4 is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when
a bolted line-to-line fault involving phase B and C occurs at bus 3. Determine the following:
(a) Sub-transient current to ground at the fault in all three phases,
(b) Current contribution from machines 1 and 2 in all three phases,
(c) Current flow through Transformers T1 and T2 in all three phases
(d) Line-to-ground voltages at all buses.

7. The system as in problem 3 is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when
a bolted double line-to-line fault involving phase B and C occurs at bus 3. Determine the
following:
(a) Sub-transient current to ground at the fault in all three phases,
(b) Current contribution from machines 1 and 2 in all three phases,
(c) Current flow through Transformers T1 and T2 in all three phases
(d) Line-to-ground voltages at all buses.

8. The system as in problem 4 is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault currents when
a bolted double line-to-line fault involving phase B and C occurs at bus 3.

(Problems 3 to 8 can be solved using the sequence bus impedance matrices or three sequence
networks. You may approach both the methods.)
