BLINK BLADE

Hello! In this guide I’ll be painting Blink Blade from Frosthaven. My general approach will be to create a black
and white value sketch followed with some Contrast Colours to get the main values and colours mapped out
quickly. I’ll then be painting the finer details/refining things on top.

I began by providing some texture I then primed the model in black followed with some zenithal highlights
to the bare parts of the base with just using grey. I’m now using some pure white to paint the glowing
some basing paste and sand: daggers and the eyes, along with a few object-source-lighting highlights:

And here I’m just using a pale grey to provide a few additional highlights:
I also decided to provide a light dry brush with some white to sharpen some of the remaining details:

I’ve chosen the following Contrast paints to provide the main colours: Ae-
thermatic Blue for the glowing daggars, fading into Leviadon Blue for the

tone. I also have some Contrast Medium to hand in case I want to thin the
Leviadon Blue:

I’m now using the Frostheart for

the surrounding area where I im-
agine some of the light from the
daggers landing...
And I’m now using the Leviadon Blue for the rest of the figure, and
wet-blending the tones as I go. I also added a touch of medium for this
colour as it’s a little heavy on its own:

Here’s how he looks once dry (I also applied a matte varnish here to take
the shine off the Contrast Colours, but you could just do this at the end):

I’m now painting the face using Gobi Brown, with just a little black mixed in for the more shadowed edges:
I’m now also using the Gobi Brown
for the little golden elements, as
well as the goggle strap:

And I’m highlighting these details

up to Sahara Yellow:

I’m now going brighter still for the glowing yellow bits with a mix of Te-
nere Yellow and Sol Yellow:
I felt that these could do with being a little more orange, so we can brush over some thinned fluorescent orange
(I’m using Hera Model’s Orange Light, but you could use whatever orange you like):

I’ve also just noticed that there are some yellow strips on the legs too:
I’m then creating an OSL highlight
Next I’m painting the hands, once
tone by mixing in some Blue Green
again with the Gobi Brown:
and some White:

I’m now brushing some thinned Flu-

orescent Magenta over the eyes:

And here I dropped a little of the

Although they’re not sculpted on We can then paint over the lights
the mini, here I’ve added the little using whatever bright or fluores-
lights on the wrist panel using pure cent tones you like (I used yellow,
white: fluorescent magenta and green):

This isn’t essential, but here I’m just mixing a blue tone using Prussian Blue and a little Black, and using it to give
a cleaner, more solid tone - mainly for the hood - where the finish of the Contrast Colour is a little patchy looking:

And here I’ve just used the Levia-

Blue all over once dry:
Next I’m freely mixing some light
blue tones to provide some gen-
eral highlights to the outfit (this is
Blue Green mixed with White, and
maybe a little of the Prussian Blue):

We can also use some pure Black to

provide some dark lining to aid defi-
nition where necessary - such as the
main folds on the hood:

I’m now going to paint the rocks, and I’ve chosen to create a purple-tinted
grey scale using Black, Graphite, Violet, and White Sands:
I’m working quite quickly here,
freely wet-blending some gentle
gradients to add interest:

Here I also decided to glaze a few little patches of blue to add interest,
and tie things together:

For the surrounding area I simply

I then dabbed on some Valhallen
shaded things down with some
Blizzard:
Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade:
This can be thinned to create a kind
of slush, which we can then push
into the recesses etc:

And this completes Blink Blade!
