Assignment 2: Design of Single effect Evaporator
Course: CHT 401 – CHEMICAL PROCESS EQUIPMENT DESIGN I
Total Marks: 15 Date of submission: 27-10-2023 12.30 PM
CO4 Develop the process design of evaporators for a given feed solution and terminal conditions L3

1. A single effect short tube vertical evaporator is to be constructed to concentrate CO4 L3 (15)

15,000 kg/hr of 5% by weight NaOH solution, available at 25oC to a final

concentration of 25% by weight. Saturated steam is available at 3.5 kgf/cm2(abs) as
the heating source. The pressure inside the evaporator is 50 cm of Hg. The cross-
sectional area of the down comer should be approximately 50% of the total cross
flow area of tubes. 50mm outer diameter tubes having 4mm thickness shall be used.
The overall heat transfer coefficient is 1650 W/m2K.
i. Calculate the down-take pipe size and tube sheet diameter.
ii. Estimate the size of vapour release drum with wire-mesh entrainment separator.
iii. Sketch the sectional elevation of the designed evaporator.

2. 9000 kg/hr of sodium hydroxide solution containing 40 percent (by weight) of CO4 L3 (15)

NaOH is to be concentrated to 70 percent in a single effect short tube vertical

evaporator which operates at a pressure of 114 mm Hg. The feed enters at 90oC and
dry, saturated steam at 650 kPa is used as heating medium. The overall heat transfer
coefficient is 2100 W/m2K.
Design the evaporator and sketch the elevation of the evaporator.

3. 35,000 kg/hr of an aqueous feed containing 1 % dissolved solids is to be CO4 L3 (15)

concentrated to 20% solids in a single effect evaporator. The feed enters at 25°C.
The steam chest is fed with saturated steam at 110°C. The absolute pressure
maintained in the evaporator is such that the water will boil at 55°C. The boiling
point elevation for the boiling solution (20% solids) is 15°C over that of water.
Specific heat of feed solution can be taken as that of water.
Latent heat of vaporization of water at 55°C is 2370 kJ/kg. Specific heat of water
vapor in the temperature range of 55 to 90°C can be assumed to be constant at 1.871
kJ/kg°C. Latent heat of steam at 110°C is 2230 kJ/kg. The overall heat transfer
coefficient, under normal operating conditions would be 2500 W/m2°C.
A vertical short-tube evaporator with the following specifications is available.

Check whether it is suitable for the above duty.
Tube:
OD = 100 mm; thickness = 1.5 mm; pitch = triangular 125 mm; length = 1220
mm, number of tubes = 626.
Downtake: ID = 1500 mm.; OD = 1520 mm.
Tube sheet: Diameter = 3400 mm; Thickness = 36 mm.
Vapor drum: Height = 3000 mm; ID of shell = 3400 mm; Thickness = 12 mm.

4. A short tube vertical evaporator is to be designed for concentrating a salt solution CO4 L3 (15)

from 1% by weight of salt to 1.5% by weight of salt. The feed rate is 10,000 lb/hr
and the temperature of feed is 100 oF. The operating pressure is 1 atm in the vapour
space and steam is supplied at a pressure 5 psig (227 oF). If the overall heat transfer
coefficient of evaporation is 250 Btu/(hr.ft2 oF), design a evaporator. Assume that
the boiling point elevation is negligible and the properties of salt solution similar to
that of water.

5. An evaporator is used to concentrate 4536 kg/h of a 20% solution of NaOH in water CO4 L3 (15)

entering at 60oC to a product of 50% solids. The pressure of the saturated steam used
is 172.4 kPa and the pressure in the vapour space of the evaporator is 11.7 kPa. The
overall heat transfer coefficient is 1560 W/m2.K. Design the evaporator.
