Performance Task: Comic Strip Creation
Objective: Create a comic strip that showcases a dialogue between characters in The Battle with
Grendel, applying correct punctuation, capitalization, and interjections. This task will help you
develop the learning competency EN9G-Ib-1.6/1.7: Use appropriate punctuation marks and
capitalization to convey meaning.
Instructions:
1. Content:
o Choose a scene from The Battle with Grendel where characters interact.
o Write a dialogue between at least two characters that includes at least 8 exchanges
(4 per character).
o Stay true to the characters and the story from The Battle with Grendel, but feel free
to add your own creative flair in the dialogue and illustrations.
o Ensure that you use correct punctuation marks, capitalization, and interjections in
the dialogue. Highlight any interjections used in your speech bubbles.
2. Comic Strip Layout:
o Your comic strip should consist of 6-8 panels that visually depict the conversation
between the characters.
o You may draw the comic by hand or use digital tools (e.g., Canva, Pixton, or any
comic strip creator tool) to design your comic strip.
o Use a long bond paper (8.5" x 13"). You are free to choose the layout orientation—
either portrait or landscape.
3. Design:
o If drawing by hand, ensure your drawings and text are clear and neat.
o If using a digital tool, export your comic strip in PDF format on the specified paper
size (8.5" x 13").
o Include speech bubbles for each character's dialogue and add appropriate facial
expressions or actions to reflect the mood of the scene.
4. Language and Mechanics:
o Pay close attention to correct use of punctuation (e.g., commas, periods, question
marks), capitalization at the beginning of sentences and proper nouns, and the
effective use of interjections (e.g., "Oh!", "Wow!", "Ugh!") to convey emotion.
o Do not copy entire dialogues from the internet. You are encouraged to use your
own words while staying faithful to the characters and story.
o Review your work to ensure there are no grammar or spelling errors.
5. Submission:
o Print your comic strip and submit it in hard copy on or before September 2,
Monday. Late submissions will affect your grade.
6. Evaluation Criteria:
o Content Accuracy: Does the dialogue accurately reflect the characters and events in
The Battle with Grendel?
o Language Mechanics: Are punctuation, capitalization, and interjections used
correctly and effectively?
o Creativity and Effort: Is the comic strip visually appealing and well-thought-out?
Have you added your own unique touch to the story?
o Completion: Does the comic strip meet all the specified requirements?
o Promptness: Was the comic strip submitted on or before the deadline?
