God chose the Jews to be His special people.
About 1400 years before the time of the Lord
Jesus, God rescued them from the slavery of
the Egyptians.
God then gave them the great land known as
Canaan. Canaan was a land full of food,
strong houses, and everything that God’s
people needed.
God asked His people to be faithful to Him,
and warned that they5 will be sent to slavery
if they worship false gods.
Eventually God’s people became so evil that
God sent the people of Babylonia to capture
the Jews of Jerusalem and take them into
slavery.
A very large Babylonian army surrounded
Jerusalem.
Since this was a punishment sent by God,
the people of Jerusalem
6 easily fell into their
hands.
The Babylonian army was very powerful. They
quickly took control of Jerusalem. The city was
very rich. Its temple was full of things made of
pure gold. They looted and took away all the
gold that they could get.
All the temple equipment such as lamps and
utensils, cups and glasses, fell into their hands
and they took them away.
7
The Babylonians took away all the healthy
men and women as slaves to work in their
country as free labourers in homes, fields,
and the construction of great buildings.
They left the weak people back in
Jerusalem because they were useless as
slaves.
Among those taken away as slaves, one
was named Daniel. 8
The king ordered his Chief Ashpenaz to select
the most brilliant and handsome men and
train them in the ways of Babylonia.
Among those Ashpenaz chose were Daniel
and three of his friends. Hananiah, Mishael,
and Azariah. The four were given Babylonian
names. Daniel was called Belteshazzar.
Hananiah was called Shadrach. Mishael was
called Meshach. Azariah
9 was called
Abednego.
The king ordered the best food for them,
suitable for royal princes which would be the
best of the best.
The Jews had to observe many restrictions
related food, because they were a chosen
people of God. Babylonians did not observe
such restrictions.
Daniel and his three friends did not want to
each such food. Also, they did not want king’s
vine. 10
Daniel asked for special permission to
consume only vegetables. He suggested a
ten-day test.
He requested that they be compared with the
other trainees who ate the king’s food after
ten days. If their health looked better, then
let them allow the same food. If they looked
weaker than the others then they will happily
eat the food ordered by
11
the king.
While the other ate food appointed by the
king, Daniel and friends ate only
vegetables for the next ten days.
At the end of ten days, Daniel and his
three friends looked healthier than all the
others. So, the Steward allowed them to
continue with that food.
In this way God showed to His children
that He helps those who obey God’s word
in everything. If we honour God, God will
honour us. 12
The king personally examined the four
friends and found them to be ten times better
than all the other trainees. They were very
good in science, arts, and administration. He
appointed them on very high positions in
Babylon.
God blessed Daniel above all of them and
eventually gave him a very high position. As
a good child of God, Daniel then promoted
his three friends to very
13 high position with
the king’s help.
Daniel and friends continue happily in the
government of Babylon.
One night, Nebuchadnezzar the king of
Babylon saw a huge statue in a dream that
disturbed him greatly.
He realized that this dream had some deep
meaning. He could not sleep the whole
night 14
Are you wondering about the
king’s dream?
Well it was tall, impressive, and it
might have looked like the above
picture!
15
The king has many advisers. They were
the wisest men in Babylon.
He called them in the morning and asked
them to tell him both his dream as well
the interpretations. They were shocked.
How could they know what dream it was!
So they asked the king from the dream.
He refused.
16
Nebuchadnezzar made it clear that he will
not reveal his dream. He was very firm. The
wise men of Babylon had to tell him the
dream as well as the interpretation.
This was an impossible request, but the king
was firm. He would not reveal the dream.
They had to find the dream and its meaning.
When they could not do it, he became very
17
angry.
Finally, Nebuchadnezzar the king became
so angry that he ordered that all of the wise
men in Babylon be killed.
In those days the rulers were very powerful
and they could kill anyone without any
restriction. So, Arioch the commander of
the king’s guards went around searching
for ALL people in Babylon identified as
wise-men in Babylon. This included Daniel
also because he was 18the wisest of them all,
and also his three friends.
When Daniel asked him, Arioch explained the
reason for this order. So, Daniel went to the
king and asked him for an appointment so he
could explain the dream to the King.
The king was pleased and fixed a time for
Daniel.
Daniel wanted time to pray to God to know
more about the dream. 19
When God’s children
face difficulties, they always pray.
Daniel went home and asked his friends
Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah to pray to
God to reveal the dream and its interpretation.
Daniel also spent time in prayer. Nothing is
difficult for God.
Since this dream was given by God, Daniel
knew that God will surely reveal it to him so
that he can tell the dream and its meaning to
the king. That way God 20 will be glorified.
That night the dream was revealed to
Daniel in a vision. The meaning of the
dream was also revealed to him.
Daniel immediately praised God for His
mercy. This is what every child of God
should do when they face a problem. Also,
they should always thank God for the
answer He gives.
21
Daniel then went to Arioch, the Chief of
King’s guard. Asked him not to execute
any of the wise men. He said he was going
to tell the dream and its meaning to the
King.
So, Arioch happily took Daniel to the king.
Daniel already had an appointment with
the king so everything was easy now for
him.
22
The dream showed a huge statue that
filled anyone with fear.
It was made up of different materials,
whereas statues are usually made up of a
single material. The statue completely
collapses at the end of the dream.
God gave information about human
history through this dream. Here is what
he told the king: 23
“O King”, Daniel said, “the creator of the
Universe has sent this message to you. Your
wise men cannot explain it because they do
not worship the true God.
In this dream you saw an enormous,
impressive, and fearsome statue. This
represents the world and some of the world
rulers to come in future. Each part of the
body gives a different
24
message. Let me
explain them:”
“The head is made of gold. This represents
you and also the kingdom of Babylon.
God used gold in this dream to show you that
you and your kingdom are very powerful.
Also, it has influence worldwide. Let me now
tell you about the chest and arms:”
(NOTE: Babylonian Empire lasted from
605BC to 539BC)
25
“The chest and arm, made up of silver a
cheaper material, shows the next kingdom. It
will be powerful, but not as powerful or
influential as the Babylonian kingdom”.
(NOTE: This was the empire of the Medes and
Persians that lasted from 539BC to 331BC.
They were mighty but were less powerful than
Babylon).
26
“The abdomen and thighs were made of
bronze, a very strong metal. This represented
a third kingdom that would rule over a very
wide area of the earth”.
(NOTE: This represented the Greek empire
which lasted between 331BC to 168BC).
27
“The legs were made up or iron, a very
strong metal. This represented the fourth
kingdom to follow. Iron here shows that it
will be very strong and that it shall crush
and break all the others”.
(This represented the Roman Empire that
ruled the world with an iron rod between
168BC to 476AD). 28
“You then saw feet made up partly of iron
and partly of baked clay, two materials
that do not mix in any way. It is partially
strong and partially brittle. This
represents a people who will not remain
united just as iron and clay do not mix”.
(NOTE: This kingdom is yet to come and
we will know the details only after it
comes).
29
“You then saw, O King, a stone that
came hurling. It was not cut by human
hands. It was of divine origin.
This reminds that God works in human
history, not because of human energy,
but by his own. God uses us humans,
but God is not dependent upon the
labours of any one of us”.
30
“That massive rock, which was not hewn by
human hands, came hurling and hit the
unstable and week iron and clay feet of the
statue”.
This is a warning to everyone that God is in
control of history. He establishes kingdoms
and He destroys them when such
destruction becomes necessary.
31
“That uncut stone from God smashed the
great idol with such power that it crumbled
into thousands of pieces”.
When God works in human history, he
works with such might that nobody can
oppose Him. What he shatters, none can put
it back.
32
“Soon the statue was blown away like dust.
The rock which had crushed it became a big
mountain that filled the whole earth.
God will establish a kingdom in future that
will crush all kingdoms, but it shall not be
crushed by anyone. Such is God’s will and
power”.
33
King Nebuchadnezzar was so stunned by all
this that he prostrated himself in front of
Daniel and said, “Truly, your God is the
greatest of gods, the Lord over kings, a
revealer of mysteries. You have been able to
reveal this secret”.
God chooses young men and women in every
generation to work for Him. When they obey
God, His name is glorified.
34
Pleased by the wisdom of Daniel, the king
made him ruler over the whole province of
Babylon. Also, since he proved himself
wiser than all, the king made him chief over
all the wise men.
At Daniel’s request, the king appointed
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be in
charge of all the affairs of the province of
Babylon.
Young Daniel was a person exactly like
you and me. However, his attitude made
him a totally unique person.
He trusted in God for everything from
protection up to revealing the dream that
God gave to Nebuchadnezzar.
In every generation God is looking for
young men and women of such
commitment.
