Term-1 (2020)

CLASS : 11 M.M : 35
SUBJECT : Physics Time : 1:30 hrs

Instructions

1) All questions are compulsory.

2) Parent signature is compulsory on your answer sheet.
3) You can submit the test latest by 8:45 pm. Late submission will not
be accepted
Note: Read the assertion and reason carefully and then mark the correct option out of the
options given below.

(a) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the
assertion.
(b) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion
(c) If assertion is true but reason is false
(d) If the assertion and reason both are false.

SECTION A (one mark each)

1. Assertion: Force on a body and the velocity, with which it is moving, cannot be added.
Reason: It is because, the dimension of force and velocity are different.
(a) (b) (c) (d)
2. Assertion: A body can be at rest even when a number of external forces are acting on
it.
Reason: It can happen, when the resultant of the concurrent forces is zero.
(a) (b) (c) (d)
3. Which of the following is a dimensionless quantity?
(a) Strain (b) Stress (c) Specific heat (d) Quantity of heat
4. Which of the following is not a vector quantity?
(a) Speed (b) Velocity (c) Displacement (d) Torque
5. When two surfaces are coated with a lubricant, then they
(a) roll upon each other
(b) slide upon each other
(c) stick to each other
(d) none of the above
6. A shell in its flight, explodes into four unequal parts, which of the following is conserved?
(a) momentum (b) kinetic energy (c) potential energy (d) both b and c
7. Can two vectors of different magnitude be combined to give zero resultant?
8. Why is static friction called a self-adjusting force?
9. What is the unit of coefficient of limiting friction?

SECTION B (Case study)

10. Circular motion:
Circular motion is a movement of an object along the circumference of a circle or rotation
along a circular path. It can be uniform, with constant angular rate of rotation and constant
speed, or non-uniform with a changing rate of rotation. The rotation around a fixed axis of a
three-dimensional body involves circular motion of its parts. The equations of motion describe
the movement of the center of mass of a body.
Uniform circular motion describes the motion of a body traversing a circular path at constant
speed. Since the body describes circular motion, its distance from the axis of rotation remains
constant at all times. Though the body's speed is constant, its velocity is not constant: velocity,
a vector quantity, depends on both the body's speed and its direction of travel. This changing
velocity indicates the presence of an acceleration; this centripetal acceleration is of constant
magnitude and directed at all times towards the axis of rotation. This acceleration is, in turn,
produced by a centripetal force which is also constant in magnitude and directed towards the
axis of rotation.

(i) A particle revolves around a circular path. The acceleration of the particle is inversely
proportional to:
(a) radius (b) velocity (c) mass of particle (d) both a and c
(ii) A stone tied to a string is rotated with a uniform speed in a vertical plane. If mass of the
stone is m, length of the string is r and linear speed of the stone is v, then tension in the string,
when the stone is at its lowest point is (g = acceleration due to gravity).
(a) mg (b) mv2/r (c) mv2/r - mg (d) mv2/r + mg
(iii) Define centripetal force.
(iv) A bucket containing water is rotated in a vertical circle. Explain, why the water does not
fall. (4)

SECTION C (two marks questions)

11. A mass of 4 kg rests on a horizontal plane. The plane is gradually inclined until at an angle θ =
15° with the horizontal, the mass just begins to stable. What is the coefficient of static friction
between the block and the surface?
12. The density of mercury is 13.6 g cm-3 in CGS system. Find its value in SI units.
13. State and illustrate parallelogram law of vector addition.
14. Write the dimensions and SI unit of
(i) linear momentum
(ii) surface tension
(iii) stress
(iv) strain
SECTION D(three marks questions)

15. State and prove work-energy theorem.

16. Two masses M and m are connected at the two ends of inextensible strings. The string passes
oven a smooth frictionless pulley. Calculate the acceleration of the masses and tension in the
string. Given m > M.
17. If the linear momentum of a body increased by 50%, what will be the % increase in the kinetic
energy of the body?
SECTION E (five marks questions)
18. (a) What is a projectile? A projectile is fired with a velocity u making an angle θ with the
horizontal. Show that its trajectory is a parabola.
(b) Derive expressions for its
(i) time of flight
(ii) time of flight
(iii) horizontal range.

19. (i) What is meant by banking of roads? Obtain an expression for the maximum speed with
which a vehicle can safely negotiate a curved road banked at angle θ.
(ii) A car of mass 1500 kg is moving with a speed of 12.5 ms-1 on a circular path of radius 20 m
on a level road. What should be the frictional force between the car and the road so that the
car does not slip? What should be the value of the coefficient of friction to attain this force?
