Computer
A computer is an electronic device that can accept data (input), process
it according to a set of instructions (program), and produce output. It's
essentially a tool that can perform tasks automatically, following a
sequence of logical operations
block digram of computer
A block diagram of a computer is a simplified graphical
representation of its components and their
interconnections. It breaks down a complex system into
smaller, more manageable blocks or modules, making it
easier to understand the overall structure and function.
CPU
ALU
(Arithemetic
logical unit)
CU
input (Control output
unit)
mu
(memory unit)
CPU stands for central processing unit
Think of it as the computer's personal assistant. It's responsible for :
Executing instructions
Performing Calculations
Managing Memory
Controlling other devices
CPU is the heart and soul of a computer, making it possible for the
machine to perform all kinds of tasks.
cpu
alu
ALU stands for Arithmetic logical unit
It carry out mathematical and logical operations
Like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
It is a crucial part of central processing unit(CPU)
It sends the numbers to the ALU
Which performs the operations and then returns to CPU
ALU is the powerhouse of the computer
cu
CU stands for control unit
It's responsible for the entire operation of the computer
It retrieves instructions from memory
It intreprets the instructions
It send signals to ALU and Memory unit
It directs the storage of results back into memory
the control unit acts as a traffic cop which ensures everything
The CPU then
processes the data
INPUT and sends back
output
These devices provides
data to CPU
Which converts
OUTPUT information and into
human perceptible form
An output device is any
piece of computer
hardware
ram rom
RAM stands for Random Access Memory ROM stands for Read-only memory
Stores data which is currently in use. Stores data permenantly
It is temporary storage It is permenant storage
Which is much faster than primary It is not as efficient as RAM
storage
Its contents are not lost when
Its contents are lost when the computer is turned off
computer is turned off
The data is non-volatile
The data is volatile
memory registers
Memory registers are small, high-speed storage units
Within the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
They are used to hold data temporarily during the
execution of instructions
They hold data that is being processed by the CPU
They contain the address of the memory location that is
being accessed
There are types of registers assigned with each task
Primary memory Secondary memory
Primary memory, also known as main Secondary memory, also known as external
memory or internal memory, is a section memory, is a type of computer storage that
of a computer's memory that the CPU is used to store data and programs outside
can access directly of the computer's primary memory
It's where the computer stores data, Unlike primary memory, secondary
instructions, and programs that are memory is non-volatile
currently being used
HDD’s, SSD’s and DVD are types of
RAM and ROM are types of primary
secondary memory
memory
They have faster access time They have slower access time
