Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research design and the methodology used in the conduct

of this study. It incorporates the sampling technique, sources of data, sampling design,

research instruments, and data gathering procedure. This chapter presents how these data

were analyzed, interpreted and presented in the easiest way possible.

Research Method

This study was undertaken using quantitative research. The researchers utilized a

structured research questionnaire on the attitude towards Mathematics and a survey

containing general information of the respondents as well as their general average to

determine their academic performance.

Research Design

The purpose of the study is to determine the attitude towards Mathematics and the

academic performance of junior high school students. Since the study conducted is

quantitative, where the relationship between attitude towards Mathematics and the

academic performance of junior high school students was studied, the research design used

is the correlational research design.

The research design used in the study is correlational which aims to investigate the

relationship between the attitude towards Mathematics and academic performance of junior

high school students at Gemumuua Agahon National High School. Through the

correlational research design, the researchers were able to understand how attitude towards

Mathematics affects the academic performance of the students.

Respondents of the Study

The population of the study were the 386 students of Gemumuua Agahon National

High School. The sample size taken from the population are 196 students. The sampling

technique used to draw the samples is stratified random sampling.

Table 1. Drawing the Samples

Grade level N n %

Grade 7 120 61 31

Grade 8 120 61 31

Grade 9 87 44 23

Grade 10 59 30 15

Total 386 196 100

The formula in computing the sample size:

n= ___N___

1+N(e)2

Where:

n = sample size

N = population size

e = desired margin of error

Sampling Design

The sampling design used to draw the samples from the population of the study is

the stratified random sampling technique where the total number of samples drawn are 196

and further distributed by year level as strata. 49 respondents are drawn for each stratum.

Data Gathering Procedure

A variety of methods were utilized to obtain the relevant data for this study using

the survey questionnaire. It enables large volumes of data to be collective over a short

period of time and can be self- administered. the questionnaire is developed by the

researchers. Students who were chosen as respondents were given one questionnaire each

and a few minutes to answer and return the questionnaire to the researchers. To obtain the

data needed in the study, the researchers sent a letter approved by the research adviser and

the secondary school principal of Gemumua Agahon National High School to ask for the

official master list of Gemumuua Agahon National High School students. After the list are

given to the researchers, the sampling design was chosen with the guidance of the

research adviser. Then the researchers sent another approved letter which seeks to ask

permission from the school head to conduct the study to the chosen samples.

After getting a permission to conduct the study, the researchers administered the

duly validated- survey questionnaire to the chosen 196 samples. The administration of the

survey questionnaires was done per grade level and the researchers were guided the

respondents in answering the questionnaire. Data gathered were subjected to statistical

analysis.
Research Instruments

The researchers used the duly validated researcher-made structured research

questionnaire on attitudes towards Mathematics and a survey focusing on general

information about the respondents and their academic performance. The structured

questionnaire aims to assess individuals' attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs towards

Mathematics by incorporating Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. This

approach allows for both quantitative measurement of attitudes and qualitative insights

into participants' experiences with Mathematics. On the other hand, the survey will gather

demographic details, study habits, and the general average of the respondents to evaluate

their academic performance. By combining these instruments, the researcher will gather

comprehensive data to analyze the relationship between attitudes towards Mathematics

and academic performance among the participants effectively.

Data analysis Procedures

The data gathered were analyzed using the following statistical tools:

Frequency count and percentage were used to determine the academic

performance of junior high school students of Gemumuua Agahon National High School.

Mean was used to determine the attitude of the junior high school students towards

Mathematics.

Pearson (r) coefficient of correlation was used to find out the relationship

between attitude and academic performance in Mathematics of junior high school students

of Gemumua Agahon
