3 on 3 BASKETBALL GAME
I. Definitions
I.1 3 on 3 basketball game
The 3 on 3 basketball is played on 1 hoop by 2 teams of 3 players and maximum if 2
substitute each. The aim of each team is to score in the basket and to prevent the other team
from scoring. The game is controlled by up to 2 officials, table officials and a sport
coordinator.
I.2 Winner of a game
The first team to score 21 points wins the game if it happens before the end of regular
playing time. This “sudden death” rule applies to regular playing time only (not to a potential
overtime)
If the score is tied at the end of regular playing time, an overtime shall be played. An
extension of 2 minutes will be added to the playing time and the team with higher score after
the extension time expires wins the game.
2. Playing Court
2.1 Playing court
A regular 3 on 3 playing court shall have a flat, hard surface free from obstructions with
dimensions of 15 m in width and 11 m in length measured from the inner edge of the
boundary line. The court shall have a regular basketball playing court sized zone, including a
free throw line (5.80 m) and a 2- points line (6.75m). (See Diagram 1)
2.2 Points field goal area
If the player scores the ball inside the arc area, the team will be given one (1) point. It a
player scores the ball beyond the arc, the team will be given two (2) points. (See Diagram 2)

3. Teams
Each team is consist of five players (3 players plus 2 substitute players).
4. Game officials
- Up to 2 officials/referees
- Up to 3 table officials (scorer, Scoreboard operator, shot-clock operator)
5. Game Duration
- The game duration is 10 minutes (regular playing time)
- An extension of 2 minutes will be added to the playing time and the team with higher score
after the extension time expires wins the game.
6. Playing Regulations
6.1 Team players
- Players can only play if his/her name is on the team’s roster.
- All players are required to wear basketball attire/uniforms (preferable team uniform)
6.2 Ball Possession
- A coin flip at start of the game will decide the initial ball possession. The winner of the flip
will have the ball possession. The team with the ball possession will check the ball to the
defensive player at the top of the court/beyond the arc before the start of the game.
- Ball possession after a successful goal of the offensive team will be given to the defensive
team. The defensive player needs to dribble or pass the ball to a teammate behind the arc.
Same thing will be done by the defensive team if they steal the ball or if they get a defensive
rebound.
- Defensive team will have the ball possession during a jumpball situation.
6.3 Shot clock
- The offensive team is given 12 seconds to shoot the ball to the ring.
- If the ball fail to touch the ring within 12 seconds, the offensive team will be called for a shot
clock violation.
6.4 Time outs
- Each team is given two (2) timeouts per regular playing time.
- Each team is given one (1) time-out during overtime.
- The team or representative player must inform the table officials ahead if the team wants a
timeout.
6.5 Violations
In 3 on 3 basketball games these are the following violations:
a. Foul
b. Traveling violation
c. Double dribble violation
d. Free throw violation
e. Delaying of the game
f. Ball last touch
6.6 Fouls
- Each player is given a limit of five (5) fouls per game. When a player reaches the 5 th foul,
he/she is automatically disqualified/out of the game.
- Each team is given a limit of five (5) team fouls (consolidated players foul). If the team
committed 6 fouls and beyond, the team will be at penalty situation
- Technical foul will be called for using verbal abuses; the team or a player is too abrasive
when disputing referee’s call. Two (2) technical fouls means automatic ejection.
- Hard fouls are considered as flagrant foul. A player may be ejected depending on the
referee’s decision.
6.7 Free Throw
-Unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line. In 3 on 3
basketball game the following situation were entitled for a free throw shoot:
Shooting foul (inside the arc) 1 free throw
Shooting foul (behind the arc) 2 free throw
Penalty for team fouls (foul number 6-9) 2 free throw
Penalty for team fouls (10 fouls and more) 2 free throw + ball possession
Penalty for technical foul 1 free throw, no change of possession
Penalty for unsportsmanlike foul 2 free throws, no change of possession
6.8 Substitutions
- Substitution of players is allow during dead ball situations, prior to the check ball.
- The substitute can enter the game after his/her teammate steps off the court behind the end
line opposite the basket.
- Substitutions require no action from the referees or table officials.
Note: 3 on 3 basketball tournament players can no longer play to 5 on 5 basketball
tournament.
