Introduction
Introduction
Structural Toolkit is software specifically developed to assist the Structural Engineering Professional
undertake common design and documentation tasks for projects containing a range of members
designs and associated documents.
Structural Toolkit has the ability to create, save and re-open a range of designs as well as a capability
to create, save and open Microsoft® Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft® Word documents, view and
manipulate Adobe PDF documents and view a variety of image types as well as linking any other
system supported document to an external editor.
New in Version 5 is the ability to analyse 3D frames using both linear and non-linear analysis.
Standards Compliance
Design templates have been prepared in accordance with Australian Standards, Australian and
International references and industry accepted technical papers.
Design templates may be updated to incorporate improvements and corrections once sufficient
examples and explanations become publically available. The time required to incorporate these
depends on the complexity and the available supporting documentation.
Any changes made to design templates, whether an improvement, correction or amendment are
provided as part of a current License Subscription.
Backward Compatibility of Design Templates
Changes to design templates are identified on the first tab of each design template being the [Info]
tab.
There is no guarantee that designs prepared by using earlier design templates will be able to be
directly compatible with newer templates (due to standard changes, or feature changes) however the
appropriate design template version used will be available.

Introduction
About the Manual
It is the purpose of this User Manual to provide basic explanation of the software functionality relating
to creation, editing and saving of projects and the associated documents.
The User Manual is not intended to include design theory; reference materials underlying the inputs,
outputs and intermediate mathematical operations required; or teach engineering principles.
Design templates are relatively transparent and an experienced designer (or designer under the
guidance of an experienced designer) should be able to replicate answers obtained from using the
design templates by hand methods. Design methodology and examples can be found in the
references stated on the first tab of each design template being the [Info] tab including relevant
Standards and text references. Some degree of shortening of output has been done as required to
prevent enormous output for member design.
Specific questions relating to steps undertaken in the design templates that are not readily available
by review of the specified reference will be answered as part of a current License Subscription.
Users of Structural Toolkit are expected to have appropriate qualifications such as a relevant Bachelor
Degree in Engineering or similar and have sufficient design experience.
The use of design software is not a replacement for appropriate qualifications and experience.

Program History
Program History
Structural Toolkit has been under development since 1993 with the first release in mid-2002. Now in
its 5th generation it offers easier than ever design and organization of associated project documents in
conjunction with the ability to perform 3D frame analysis using linear and non-linear methods.
Early versions of Structural Toolkit used Microsoft® Excel given its suitability for developing
calculation based solutions. Visual Basic for Application was used throughout to provide access to
dialogs and complex solution algorithms.
Structural Toolkit has been a stand-alone application having no reliance on the Microsoft® Excel
product since Version 4. It does however keep the desktop format found
in the earlier versions. Microsoft® Excel still remains an important development tool to engineers
and to the development of the Structural Toolkit design templates.
The use of a stand-alone application has enabled the commonly requested integration of saving and
loading of member designs but more importantly introduces a wide variety of other capabilities such
as arrangement of the documents into a project structure, support for direct PDF exporting, support
for the creation, opening and saving of Microsoft® Excel and Microsoft® Word documents as well as
providing the framework for the analysis feature as well as supporting future document types.
Version 1 STK 1
Version 1 was released in mid-2002 offering a diverse range of design templates to assist with the
most commonly engineered items. Templates were current with Australian Standards and included
many features previously unseen in design software. During the next six months regular updates
were made incorporating new design templates, tabs and design parameters, and the use of Greek
symbols in variables.

Version 2 STK 2
Version 2 was introduced in January 2003 and saw major changes in the formatting of the design
templates to improve output quality and add project headings and the use of logo images. Units were
modified to show correct superscripts and mathematical symbols. Every design template was
updated including major revisions for the new loading Standards. The Masonry design template was
also fully revised allowing even easier design of masonry elements.
Picture 3 Structural Toolkit V2 Icon
The final version update was 2.32.
Version 3 STK 3
Version 3 was introduced in June 2005 (concurrent with Version 2.27 update).
Version 3 added new design templates including Post Footings, Propping Pads, Propped Beams, PFC
& Angle Lintels, Timber Columns, Timber Floor Beam, Timber Propped Beam, Timber Roof Beam.
Revisions were also made to the Composite design template linking in the Analysis module. Angle
Lintels was fully updated to allow for loads applied outside the shear centre. Steel Floor and Roof
Beams were modified to allow for assessment at specific segment locations. Side Cleat, End Plate
and Base Plate designs were also added.

Picture 5 Structural Toolkit V3 Desktop
Version 3 incorporated a number of refined formatting changes which included a slight reduction in
the font size to enable additional lines to be added to the outputs. Many of the standard design
templates also had load entry lines added to make load building faster.
Data validation was introduced for many of the input cells. Input cells that had common input values
such as reinforcement grade, concrete strength and bar sizes were provided with in-cell list boxes
which drop down when selected allowing a predefined value to be used.
Internet module checking was included to assist users monitoring for updates.
The final version update was 3.50

Version 4 - STK Live
In 2007 a decision was made to develop a specific application that did not require the use of the
Microsoft® Excel product to allow management of member designs, and handling of any other
document types that make up a design project.
Picture 6 Structural Toolkit V4 Icon
More and more complexity with the evolving Office product and its interaction with the newer 64 bit
operating systems reinforced this decision.
The new application is stand-alone software written in Visual Basic using Microsoft® Visual Studio
and the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
Version 4 offers the ability of saving and loading of member designs, arrangement of the documents
into a project structure, support for direct PDF exporting, support for the creation, opening and saving
of Microsoft® Excel and Microsoft® Word documents, viewing and manipulating Adobe PDF
documents and view a variety of image types. Furthermore the application provides the framework
for supporting many future document types.
The Version 4 software offers a similar feel to the existing Microsoft Office products making it very
easy to use.
Version 4 was released in November 2010.
A number of new design templates assisting civil design including ARI Calculations and Stormwater
Detention. Structural design templates have been added for Sleeper Retaining Walls, PFC & Plate
Lintel, Steel Window Support, Timber Circular Columns and Masonry Bondbeams. A units convertor
has also been added.
New codes have been incorporated as part of V4.0.1.0 being Concrete (2009), Timber (2010) and
Wind (2011).

Version 5 Structural Toolkit with Analysis
Version 5 adds an updated interface style, NET Framework 4.0 compatibility and linear and non-linear
frame analysis.
The matrix stiffness method of analysis began development prior to the release of Version 4 and has
involved the complex development of mathematical algorithms, matrix solvers, and graphic engines.
The analysis separates itself from existing analysis programs starting out with a very user friendly,
fully 3D world. All modelling, analysis and results can be performed within the same window.
Several new design modules were also produced for this release and a number of features added
including Timber Mullion and Timber Wall Tie as well as a new ability to create and use Custom
Timber Grades. Considerable review has also been undertaken with many of the modules.

Future Development
Currently work is being done on a number of additional modules and reviews are constantly being
undertaken to keep up to date with code and text changes.
Advanced analysis features have been developed including buckling, master-slaves, temperature
rises, member offsets and will be offered as additional purchases when complete.
Flagged development includes increased solver speed of larger solutions, and faster graphical display
for these larger solutions,
Other areas being considered include dynamic analysis and integration of the design process into the
analysis.
Of course, the direction of development is influenced by user demand.

Remote Licenses and Network Communication (TCP/IP)
The Structural Toolkit License Manager uses TCP/IP port communication to both listen and talk to
computers that are running the Structural Toolkit software.
The default TCP/IP port is 2235. The port number is specified in the Structural Toolkit License
Manager settings which can be changed to any valid, available port. A corresponding port must be set
in the Structural Toolkit license manager settings.
It is necessary to ensure that both the Server Computer and the Workstation Computer have the
specified TCP/IP port open through the firewall. If either the Server Computer or Workstation
Computer is running Internet Security software or Virus Protection software then specific exceptions
may also need to be made within that software to allow the port talking.
If the specified port on both the Server Computer and the Workstation Computer are not open then
the Structural Toolkit software will be unable to obtain a Remote License.
The setup program prompts to create these port rules automatically.
The ways in which the firewall rules are created on the operating system and specific exceptions for
Internet Security/Virus software are made are not covered in this User Manual. You should seek
advice from an IT Professional or from the Software Vendor from which the security software was
obtained.

Projects
Projects
A project is a collection of supported document types arranged into sections.
Project Structure
Projects are saved in a folder structure reflecting the organization of the project shown within the
project tree.
The Project Definition file is an XML file (text file) and provides the structure, and links to the
documents that make up the project.
The folders in a project are supported to a single depth only. That is, the main project folder contains
only the Project Definition file and a number of subfolders. Subfolders under these subfolders (or
nested folders) cannot be created in Structural Toolkit and are ignored when loading. A warning will
be shown unless turned off in the Program Options.
You may manually place these ignored nested folders containing documents if you require.
When an existing document is added to the project, a copy of the file is placed into the
Project Folder.
Project Properties
Projects have a number of associated properties.
These include a Description and Notes field, an Author, Member Headers as well as associated date
properties.
These properties can be viewed (some being able to be modified) in the Property Tab (refer to the
section explaining the Property Tab).
AutoSave Feature
Structural Toolkit has an automated save features to ensure the project remains current.
When a new project is created it has no project name and is located in the AutoSave folder within the
Projects Folder.
When a new document is added, is copied into the project folder then the project is saved to reflect
the current state of the project with the new document.
At a set time interval, all open documents will be saved silently, and the Project file also saved. This
feature can be disabled, or the time between saved adjusted in the Options > General > Autosave
options > Enable Austosave and Duration.

Resetting members
The member can be reset using the [Reset] button.
You can also save your own reset values for each design template.
These are stored in the Reset Folder (refer to the section on application folders)

Custom Steel Sections
Custom steel sections can be created using either the steel [Section Properties] module where
standard profiles can be created and saved as a custom section; or using the Steel Library [Custom]
tab by entering manual values.
Once the custom section has been created and saved (as an XML file), the section can be accessed
using the standard Steel Selection Dialog using the [Load] button.
Note that the custom section must be saved in a common library area on your computer or network
and can not be saved from within the project folder.
Custom Timber Grades
Custom timber grades can be created and saved using the Timber Library [Custom] tab.
It may be appropriate to select a similar timber section first, then use the [From Current] button to
load the relevant properties into the custom fields. Modify the values as appropriate. Where the a
property may be dependent on the dimension of the selected member, this can be input as a formula
(use a Hyspan for instance to see how this is done). The Apply Size modifiers flag will automatically
allow the size modifiers under the relevant grade tables from the AS1720 standard to be applied, or
not (if perhaps the section property changes automatically as a result of the size)
Note that the custom grade must be saved in a common library area on your computer or network
and can not be saved from within the project folder.

Design tabs
Each module is separated in to module tabs. The name of each of the module tabs is located on the
bottom of the Excel application screen. Each tab contains a separate part of the design or analysis
process. The first tab in each module is the information tab which contains license details, references
and revisions to the module.
To change the current tab within a module, select the tab using the mouse pointer. The will activate
the tab.
Screenshot 43 Member design tabs
Module protection
Design templates are protected from inadvertent damage. Tabs cannot be re-arranged, and only
areas designated as input fields may be modified. Although you may select cells not designated as
input fields, the contents are locked, and cannot be changed.
Color coding
Design templates use a system of standard colors for input fields, tables, errors, etc.
Input fields
Dark grey fields are used to identify input fields. Where the input field is used to select one of a
number of options, the available choices are displayed beside the field. The option is generally a
cted.
The option character is not case sensitive.
The in-cell calculator
The data may be entered by typing a value, or formula. To input a formula, select the cell and start
selecting an input
Span input field is selected. The full range of mathematical functions can be accessed.

Data validation
Cells containing options or having a usual set of values have data validation applied. When the field is
selected a drop down arrow will show. Use the mouse to select the dropdown, or use the Alt-Down
arrow key combination to show the available options, Cells that can only have a set number of
options will not allow any other value to be input.
Picture 58 Data drop downs
Warnings and errors
Warnings are displayed in red (default) text, and appear when the warning is necessary. Errors are
also displayed as red text, and appear when the error has occurred in the input or output. Red text
values are sometime displayed when the value, although valid, may be unusual. For example, the
depth to tensile reinforcement in a beam reduces as the bars will not fit in a single layer, or the live
load factor in a beam analysis is set to something other than 1.5.
Where capacity is being compared with a design action, the result displays either OK, or No Good.
Accept is sometimes displayed when the ratio exceeds, but is close to 1.00. The designer must
always use professional judgment in the assessment of results.
The color of warning may be altered on the [Config] tab to red, green or blue.
Buttons
Push buttons are used to access dialog boxes that allow selection of certain items such as beam
often has two additional buttons to the side with up and down arrows. This allows quick up and
down sizing of the currently selected member type.
Picture 59 Selection button
The Notes Area
Useful functions, notes, tables and additional data are displayed in the light grey area on the right side
of the work area, labeled Notes.

Entering reinforcement area
When areas of reinforcing steel to be entered, these can be specified in several ways.
When Bar cts/No is displayed, either the number of bars in the section may be input (for example,
displayed as 4-N20), or the actual centres (for example, displayed as N20-200cts). Structural Toolkit
will calculate the number of bars required based on the width of the section. In some fields, it is also
possible to enter the actual area of steel, such as 650mm 2. (The description will display N20-650mm2
for example)
Input validation
Many of the input cells have data validation attached. This ensures that only the available options are
used. Data validation has also been used to provide a list drop-down of common inputs ie. Bar sizes
for reinforcement.
Comments
Comments can be added to designs by using a right-click on any location on the page not containing a
comment. Once created, the comment box may be resized, moved around (or deleted). Comments
may be optionally not printed by accessing the Options > Document > Comments.

Composite Modules
Notes
The analysis modes are (A)utomatic, (C)onstruction, (I)service and position (X).
For simple beams with a single point load, the Automatic analysis is the easiest way to design the
beam. The PCC is automatically calculated. Note the number of studs nominated relate to the
number between the support and the PCC from each end.
With manual mode the actual moments and position of the PCC can be specified, note however, using
manual analysis the deflection cannot be calculated.
With the construction and in-service analysis, start by clearing the results using the [Clear Results…]
button. Set the Analysis mode to “C” and switch to the analysis module, input the loads, then switch
back and “Transfer Construction]. Set the Analysis mode to “I” and switch to the analysis module,
input the loads, then switch back and “Transfer In-Service]. The design and deflections can then be
reviewed. Note that if the beam size changes, the same process must be repeated if the self-weight of
the beam is to be considered accurately.

Analysis: Calculates the design moments and minimum thickness for deemed-to-comply
deflection limits given a specified geometry and loads.
Prelim: Provides a simplified approximation for determining the required thickness of a two-
way slab.
Examples
Refer to example 16.3 in Warner Rangan Hall.
The slab depth approximation can be performed using the Prelim tab. The short term factor used in
this example is 0.6 based on the superseded concrete standard. AS1170.1 requires this to be 0.7.
For calculation of strip moments, differences occur with the example due to the short term factor
again being 0.7 rather than the superseded 0.6, the dead load factor is 1.2 rather than the superseded
1.25, and the default self-weight calculation is based on 25kN/m ³.

Info: Lists the module version, references and revisions.
Analysis: Calculates the dimensions of the slab and checks the minimum strength
requirements
Prelim: Inputs of dead and live loads and calculates the minimum thickness required
Examples
Refer to example 16.2 in Warner Rangan Hall.
The slab depth approximation can be performed using the Prelim tab. The short term factor used in
this example is 0.5 based on the superseded concrete standard. AS1170.1 requires this to be 0.7.
For the moment calculations, differences occur with the example due to the short term factor again
being 0.7 rather than the superseded 0.5, the dead load factor is 1.2 rather than the superseded 1.25,
and the default self-weight calculation is based on 25kN/m³. There are also some minor differences in
the calculation of β. There is an option to directly use the formula for the β calculation in the notes
area.

Examples
Refer to the Portal Frame Handbook example 6.11.2. Slight differences occur in this example as the
reference uses a ultimate dead load factor of 1.25 as opposed to the current 1.2 value, and Structural
Toolkit calculates self-weight opposed to 9.8 used in the
reference.
Notes
Moment amplifier δb options exist in the notes area to calculate more accurate amplification value
specified in reference [3] and to also turn of the warning when δb exceeds 1.4 as specified in

Design: Calculates the load for a group of bolts subject to axial loading and bending.
Examples
Ref [3] Section 3.11.5 discusses rigid plate connections. Refer to example 3.7 and 3.8.
Example 3.7 neglects the 5th row of bolts from the bottom, and calculates the neutral axis on the
basis of the overall plate depth as opposed to the depth from the bottom of the plate to the top row
of holes. There is a small difference in results due to the example transcribing the total of ni.yi.yt*
incorrectly.
Example 3.8 again calculates the neutral axis on the basis of the overall plate depth. There is a small
difference in results due to an arithmetic error in the 1st bolt row.
Notes
The height of the neutral axis varies between a one half and one sixth of the height of the end plate
where the depth is taken from the bottom of the plate to the top row of bolt holes (assuming that the
bottom of the plate is in compression.) One sixth is recommended as being more realistic according
to Ref [3].
The plate moment assumes that the moment generates a moment failure in either horizontal bending
across the top of the end plate, or vertical bending along the side considering the top bolts and
contributory plate for this bolt which is likely to be conservative.
Once the bolt forces are determined, the Bolt & Weld module may be used to select an appropriate
bolt.
