By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Define forms in music
 Mentionthe musical forms
 Stateand explain the progressions of the musical forms
Presentation: (step by step exposition of the material)
St e p 1 :
Form in music means design. Before composing a song, the composer must plan the
format or nature of the song.
St e p 2 :
Forms in music means design or structure. We have four types of forms in music:
 Binary form (A B)
 Ternary form (A B A)
 Rondo / Riternello (A B A C A)
 Theme and variation
St e p 3 :
Binary form is a musical form in two parts or two related sections, both of which are
usually represented. In music this is usually performed as A B. Binary form was very
popular during baroque era/period. Example of binary form song is Greensleeves.
Ternary form is a musical form consisting of three distinct sections, though it might
seem logical but it is usually schematized as ABA. Example of ternary form are: De
capo Aria, the trumpet shall sound by G.F. Handel. Chopin’s Prelude in D flat major.
Rondo / Riternello is a form which sometimes a principal theme is called a refrain,
alternating with one or more contrasting theme, generally called episodes. Examples
of rondo form song: Fur Elise.
Theme and Variation is a popular musical form which a composer states a melody
and repeats the melody severally with modifications each time the melody is
INSTRUCTOR: KURUYE-ALELE S.A. 07065481642 [email protected]
repeated to create interest or variety. Example of theme and variations: Harmonious
black smith.
C o n cl u s i o n :
Every piece or tune and a structure and that’s the beauty of the art. Without a proper
plan or structure, the piece will be Pattern-less.

piano, etc.
White notes are called naturals and the black keys are sharps and flats.
