Sensitivity
Specificity
Positive predictive value
Negative predicitve value
Sensitivity

is the probability of a laboratory test being positive if the patient has the
disease in question
Specificity

is the probability of a laboratory test being negative if the patient does not
have the disease in question
Positive predictive value

Positive predictive value is the proportion of cases giving

positive test results who are already patients
Negative predictive value

Negative predictive value is the proportion of the cases

giving negative test results who are already healthy
Sample problems
Problem 1: Breast Cancer Screening
A new mammogram screening test is developed to
detect breast cancer. Out of 1000 women tested:
* 100 women actually have breast cancer.
* The test correctly identifies 90 of these 100 women
as having breast cancer.
* The test incorrectly identifies 20 women who do not
have breast cancer as having breast cancer.
Calculate the:
Sensitivity
Specificity
Problem 2: COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test
A rapid antigen test for COVID-19 is administered to 500 people.
* 100 people are known to have COVID-19.
* The test correctly identifies 85 of these 100 people as positive.
* The test incorrectly identifies 20 people who do not have COVID-19 as
positive.
Calculate:
* Sensitivity of the test
* Specificity of the test
Problem 3: Diabetes Screening
A new blood test is developed to screen for diabetes. Of 200 people
tested:
* 50 people have diabetes.
* The test correctly identifies 45 of these 50 people as having diabetes.
* The test incorrectly identifies 10 people who do not have diabetes as
having diabetes.
Calculate:
* Sensitivity of the test
* Specificity of the test
