explain the zones.
Ans. Depending on the distance from the equator, there are three climatic
zones on the earth:
a) Torrid zone: The regions near the equator get the direct rays of the sun
and thus the maximum heat.
b) Frigid zone: The regions near the North and South poles get slanted rays
of the sun and thus are cooler.
c) Temperate zone: The regions between the torrid and frigid zones form
the temperate zones.
3. Write four functions of the trunk of an elephant.
Ans. a) In elephants, the upper lip is fused with the nose and is modified in
the form of a long trunk.
b)The trunk is used for breathing, feeding, smelling, drinking, lifting load,
grasping and defense.
4. What is hibernation?
Ans. Long sleeps during extreme cold conditions to conserve heat is known
as hibernation. This is exhibited by polar animals.
5. Why do animals in the tropical rainforests live on different layers of the
forest?
Ans. The tropical rainforest region has various types of animals. To avoid
competition for food, the animals confine themselves to different layers of
the forest.
6. Why are Siberian cranes called migratory birds?
Ans. 1. To cope up with the cold and shortage of food supply during
winter months, Siberian cranes move a colder place to a warmer place.
2. This seasonal journey undertaken by many species of birds and animals
is called migration. Thus, Siberian crane is called a migratory bird.
7. Give Reasons

Ans. The white fur of the polar bear helps in camouflaging as it blends with
the snow.
b) A thick layer of fat called blubber is present in the polar animals.
Ans. Polar animals can maintain their body temperature even in severe
cold climatic conditions due to a thick layer of fat called blubber present
under their skin. It acts as an insulator.
c)Seals have sensitive whiskers.
Ans. Seals have sensitive whiskers that can sense even slight changes in the
water current. They also help to feel fish in darkness and catch them for
food.

d) kangaroo rats
Ans. a) PENGUIN
(i) It has a thick layer of stiff and densely packed feathers that blocks the
Antarctic waters from reaching its skin while swimming.
(ii) It has a special nasal passage that prevents the loss of heat during
exhalation.
b) Lion-tailed macaque
(i) It has a long muscular tail to grasp branches.
(ii) It has a characteristic mane around the face.
c) RED-EYED TREE FROG
(i) It has a bright green body with blue sides and pale yellow stripes, which
helps in camouflaging.
(ii) Its eyes are red and bulging. This scares away the potential predators.
