INTRODUCTION
Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection carried by the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus ,
which is a small tapeworm. Man acquires the disease by ingesting parasitic eggs, which develop
into hydatid cysts, usually in the liver or lung and less commonly in other organs; the most
common site of infection is the liver, with an infection rate of 50% to approximately 70%
Human infection is acquired by ingesting parasite eggs from infected animals. E g ranulosus
causes cystic echinococcosis in humans, a condition that is found throughout the world and is
endemic in large sheep-raising areas in Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean, South America, and
northern Kenya With immigration, the prevalence of the disease has increased in Europe, North
America, and particularly in northwestern China.
Benzimidazole compounds have recently been favored for medical treatment of the disease, but
surgery is still the mainstay of treatment despite advances in medical treatment and interventional
radiologic techniques .Laparoscopic surgery is a new therapeutic method for the treatment of
hepatic echinococcosis.
AIMS
To assess feasibility and effectiveness of Laparoscopy in treating Hepatic Hydatid Cyst
OBJECTIVES

Operative time period

Perioperative surgical
Hospital stay
STUDY DESIGN

The study design will be carried in the Department of Minimal access and
General surgery GMC Srinagar
This will be a prospective observational study design
MATERIALS & METHODS
All patients within the included age group shall be assessed by thorough history
taking especially of occupational history family history and clinical examination will
undergo clinical and laboratory studies ( Blood grouping, complete blood count,
coagulation studies, LFT, hepatitis serology, urine R/E)and ECG. Serological evaluation
will be done by ELISA.Preoperative radiological studies will include chest radiography,
abdominal ultrasonography, CECT computed tomography. Sonological data will be
interpreted based on the type of cyst according to Gharbi classification.Cysts will also
be staged according to the world health organization international working group on
Echinococcus (WHO-IWGE) standardized classification for US. All patient will receive
Albendazole 10-15mg/kg/day for 2 week in the preoperative period and underwent
Laparoscopic management for hepatic hydatid cyst.
INCLUSION CRITERIA
Age >18 years <65years
The patients diagnosed with the hepatic CE by
Ultrasonography or CT
EXCLUSION CRITERIA
Non hepatic hydatid cyst
