ONU / ONT

In an FTTH network, the device used in the customer premises is called ONU or
ONT. Also known as CPE (Consumer premises equipment). They are classified
according it's different features

Difference between onu and ont

As mentioned in Chapter 12, FTTH has 2 different criteria: EPON and GPON. Here
we can define ONU as EPON CPE and ONT as GPON CPE. But in the latest
scenario, most CPEs come as XPON ONT. This means that these types of CPEs will
work with EPON OLT as well as GPON OLT. This XPON ONT also known as dual
mode ONT.

Different types of ONU / ONT

The main part of ONU / T is the CPU chipset. Different brand chipsets are used to
manufacture ONU / T. The major brands are TK (Broadcom), ZTE, Realtek, MTK
and Hisilicon. Different models of CPU chipsets from the same brand are used
depending on the features of ONU / T.

Bridge mode ONU/T (singleethernet port), ONU/T with 300Mbps wifi (2.4Ghz)
and
1000Mbps Wifi (ac series)(2.4Ghz+5Ghz), ONU/T with and without telephone
port
,single and multiple ethernet(LAN) port, ethernet port with 100Mbps speed
and
1000Mbps (1Gbps) speed are the major features of different types of CPEs.

Each brand introduces a new generation of CPU chipsets to add new features as
technology advances. These chips can be identified by different model numbers

DC power adapter and LAN cables are the main accessories of ONU / T. Power
adapter models vary depending on the power consumption of each model. The
variants of adapters used with different ONU / T are 12 Volt 500mA, 1A and 1.5A.
POWER ADAPTER LAN CABLE (CAT5)

LAN cables may not be available with lower models of ONU / T. But like OLT, all
ONU / T will add a user manual and warranty card.

SFU, HGU & MDU

CPEs are divided into 3 categories according to their different characteristics. They
are SFU, HGU and MDU. The basic model that converts optical to Ethernet is called
SFU (Single Family Unit). SFU models have no home gateway functions. SFU
usually does not support WIFI function.

HGU is a “home gateway unit” type ONU, and supports three-layer functions and
routing. HGU supports WIFI function and VOIP (voice over internet protocol)
(telephone) function.
MDU (Multi Dwelling Unit) multi-family unit ONU/T mainly used in FTTB or
FTTC mode to connect multiple residential users for broadband access and VOIP. It
is usually with 4 to 24 Ethernet and VoIP ports.
RPOE,CATV ONU/T AND SFP ONU
Reverse power over ethernet (RPOE) is when the DC power comes to reverse into
the ONU and keep ONU power on until reverse power gets. DC power can also be
supplied to this type of onu through its all ethernet (LAN) ports.
Basically reverse poe ONU is a customized ONU design for internet service
providers to solve power problems for distribution internet connection in different
homes or cameras.
CATV ONU solution is a wavelength integration technology can serve Television
signals also along with internet, but from the same ONU.
ONU/T, modem , Router

ONTs in different regions are called modems and routers. If any device used in a
network performs modulation and demodulation for an Internet connection, it is
called a modem. Actually HGU type ONTs have this function. Hence ONTs can also
be called modems. A router is a device that allows 2 different IP networks to connect
to each other. WiFi ONTs work with this function.o ONT can also be called a router.

Modems and routers are available as separate devices in addition to ONTs. But such
devices do not have fiber connectivity. Examples are the ADSL modem and normal
WiFi router.

ADSL MODEM WIFI ROUTER

Wi-Fi access point (AP), Wi-Fi hotspot, and Wi-Fi repeater are different types of
Wi-Fi devices that use almost the same technology but are used in different
environmental wireless applications.
