‘Autoclaved aerated concrete
(AAC) blocks were first devel-
oped by a Swedish architect
and inventor named Johan Axel
Eriksson in the 1920s. Eriks-
son was looking for a building
material that was lightweight,
fireproof, and energy-efficient.
He began experimenting with different
rmistures of cement, lime, and sand
and eventually discovered that by add:
ing an expansion agent to the mixture
and curingit in an autoclave, he could
produce a material that met all of
his criteria Eriksson's invention was
patented in 1924 and the first AAC fac
tory was built in Sweden the following
year. Since then, AAC has been used in
‘many countries asa building material
Today, AAC is a popular bullding,
‘material in Europe, Asia, the Americas,
Oceania, and increasingly the Philip
pines. AAC is enviranmentally friendly,
andin line wth the world trend,
‘Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Blocks
are high-performing building material
thats strong, solid, and lightweight
compared to concrete hollow blocks
(CHB) and quick-dry walls. It's
eco-friendly, non-combustible, cost
efficient, and with excellent noise
reduction performance. Composed of
{quartz sand, calcined gypsum, ime,
‘cement, water, and aluminum powder,

lation, and fire and mold resistance.
AAC is well suited for high-rise buildings
and those with high-temperature varia.
tions. Due to its lower density, high-rise
buildings constructed using AAC require
less steel and concrete for structural
members, The mortar needed for laying
‘AAC blocks is reduced due tothe lower
number of joints. Similarly, the material

required for renderings also lower due
tothe dimensional accuracy of AAC.
The increased thermal efficiency of AAC
‘makes it suitable for use in areas with
extreme temperatures, asit eliminates
the need for separate materials for con
struction and insulation, leading to faster
construction and cost savings.

‘The instalation of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks
Involves the fllowing steps:
Preparation of the foundation: The foundation must be level
‘and stable, and the walls must be straight and plumb.
Cutting and shaping: AAC blocks may need to be cut tosize to
fitthe specific dimensions ofthe wall. This ean be done with a
carbide saw equipped with a diamond blade.
Laying the blocks: The AAC blocks are aid on top of a bed of
‘mortar to allow forthe application of mortar to the vertical joints.
“The olocks are then tapped gently into place to ensure a tight fit
using rubber mallet.
‘Application of AKC Adhesives: {he vertical nts between the
‘AAC blocks are filled with a special AAC adhesive that is designed
for use with AAC blocks. The adhesive material must be applied
consistently and must be smoothed to ensure a neat and uniform
finish using trowel with different dimension that fits withthe size
‘of the AAC blocks.
‘Seismic Gaps: Put 15mm - 20mm seismic gap between the AAC
blocks and beams and columns. Seismic gaps play an impor-
tant role inthe installation of autoclaved aerated concrete
(AAC) blocks. A seismic gap is a small gap left between adja:
‘cent AAC blocks during construction to allow for movement
between biocks duringan earthquake. You can use backer
‘0d, sealant, styrofoam, PL. foam, or soft mortar.
Horizontal and Vertical Rebars for Dowel: The 8 inches
with 10mm diameter rebars are drilled in the beam, slab,
columns and embedded into the blocks.
‘Accessories: Rubber mallet, carbide saw, dowel bar
(inches, 10mm diameter), AAC Adhesives, cement, leveling
ba, drill mixer, trowel.
