7. For Mahurat purposes – months are of 2 types – lunar & solar month – total 12 months.
8. Lunar Month – Vikram Samvat is based on it.
a. One lunar month on an average is of 29.5 days. Hence lunar year is 354 days on
average.
b. Amavasya to Amavasya (Aman mass) or Poornima to Poornima (Purniman Mass)
c. Better Definition: When longitude of Sun and Moon are equal that is the ending
point of month – Amavasya tithi and thereafter whenever it completes 180 degree
from the Sun then that point is the ending point of Poornima
d. Chandra graham on Poornima
e. Surya graham on Amavasya
f. Some tithis can be more or less than 24 hours.
g. Synodic period of moon is also known as lunar month.
9. Solar Month – time for which Sun remains in a rashi – Solar Ingress – Sankranti
a. Time period from one Sankranti to another Sankranti is known as a solar month.
10. Adhik Mass – extra month – also called as Mal Mass
a. Auspicious works like marriages not done in this time.
11. Tropical year and Sidereal year (Nirayan – 1st point of Aries) have slight difference.
12. Sidereal year – 365.xx – days taken by Sun to return to 1st point of Aries.
13. 1 lunar year is 11 days lesser than 1 solar year (approx.). Hence Adhik Mass to sync lunar
months with solar months.
14. Solar month is according to the seasons.
15. Muslim calendar is also based on moon – but month starts from Dwitiya. They don’t consider
Adhik Mass. Hence ID can fall in any month. Every lunar year hence falls behind solar year by
11 days.
16. Uttarayan and Dakshiyan are also based on Solar months.
17. Marriages are recommended in Uttaryan
18. Uttarayan is when Sun comes in Makara rashi – Makar Sankranti till Gemini – southern
direction to Northern.
19. Dakshinyan – Sun from Cancer to Sagittarius end.
20. Nirayan Makar Sankranti comes around 14th Jan.
21. Sayan Makar Sankranti comes around 23rd Dec.

4. Karan – astronomy class – every tithi has 2 karans. With new tithi, new karan starts. Middle
portion of tithi, 1 karan ends and other karan begins.
5. Name of 7 karans repeat – cyclic in nature
6. In a month 8 cycles of 7 karans and 4 karans are fixed – Shakuni, chaturpad, Nag, Kintubs –
these 4 are of malefic nature, appear Amavasya (Chaturpad, Nag), Shakuni (14th tithi, 2nd
Karan), bright half (pratipada 1st karan is Kintub). These 4 karans are avoided.
7. Vishtikaran is also known as Bhadra and is also avoided for auspicious works. So, there will
be 8 bhadras in a month.
8. Residence of Bhadra – connected with Lord Shiva – when Bhadra is running and Moon is in
Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, Pisces then Bhadra Karan is said to be residing on Earth/Mritu Lok. If
Moon is placed Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio then if Bhadra Karan comes then Bhadra is
said to reside in Heaven / Swarga Lok. If Moon is in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn then
Bhadra is said to reside in Patala Lok. Bhadra on earth is considered as most malefic.
9. Tithi Shay – if a tithi appears after sunrise on a day and ends before the sunrise on the next
day, then such tithi is said to be Shay.
10. Tithi Vridhi – if a tithi appears at Sun rise on a day and is also present on Sun rise on next
date then it is said to be tithi Vridhi.

14. Savan day is used for age calculation, period of pregnancy, prayschit karam.
15. Vaar is governed by Savan.
16. Indian Panchang Vaar starts from sunrise, whereas in English Calendar starts from mid-night
of the previous night.
17. Nakshatra month – when Mo transits all the 27 nakshatras the time taken by Mo is called as
1 nakshatra month. Gandmool shanti (Ashwini, Magha, Mool, Ashlesha, Jyestha, Revati) is
performed as per Nakshatra month – same nakshatra of birth when repeated then pooja is
performed.
18. Adhik mass generally comes between Chaitra to Ashad mass.
19. At times phagun and savan months are also seen twice – rare.
20. Paush, Magh – these months are prone to Shay.

benefic as lords of those vars are natural benefic) Badhara Tithi (2nd,7th,12th) + Malefic Var +
Nakshatra Vishkah PP, Krittika, UA, UP (nakshatra falling in one sign only – Aries Ashwini,
Bharni; Taurus – Rohini, Gemini – Adra, Cancer – Pushya, – if work done in this yoga, then
same work can be repeated thrice
17. Dwi Pushkar Yog – Malefic Var + Bhadra Tithi + Mars Nakshatra (Mrigshira, Chitra,
Dhanishtha) – if work done in this yoga, then same work can be repeated twice. Even if the
work is of auspicious nature, we would not like it to be repeated, like marriage.

These Nakshatras are of Mars only (Mrigshirra, Chittra, Dhanisha)
2. Tri Pushkar Yoga – Nakshatras divided into 2 signs in ratio of 1:3 – Nakshatras belonging to
Su, Ju fall in this category – Krittika, UP, US, Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadra
3. Panchak
a. Mo in Aquarius / Pisces – 2nd half of Dhanistha (50%), Shatbisha, PB, UB & Revati
b. This period of 4-5 das
c. Certain works to be avoided – cremation (else 5 deaths are said, if cremated then do
Panchak Shanti, or put four kush grass dummies), traveling towards South direction,
weaving cots, accumulating wood/grass, thatching of roofs

degrees of Sun. To be avoided at all times. House Construction to be avoided.
c. Nripa Baan (King): Add 1 to Su longitude, divide by 9. If remainder 5. 4,13,22 degrees
of Sun. To be avoided all day. Service of the king to be avoided.
d. Chora Baan (Thief): Add 8 to Su longitude, divide by 9. If remainder 5. 6,15,24
degrees of Sun. To be avoided all night. Journey to be avoided.
e. Mrityua Baan (Death): Add 4 to Su longitude, divide by 9. If remainder 5. 1,10,19, 28
degrees of Sun. To be avoided at two junctions of day & night. Marriage to be
avoided.
5. Holashtak – 8 days before Holika – Falguna Shukla Ashtami to Falguna Shukla Poornima to be
avoided for marriage and other auspicious ceremonies.
6. Adal Yoga – Mo nakshatra is 2nd/7th/9h/14th/16th/21st/23rd/28th from Su nakshatra. To be
avoided for military work, agricultural work, stone related work. Not harmful for marriage.
Counting will be done including Abhijit Nakshatra
7. Vidal Yoga – Count from Su’s nakshatra to Mo nakshatra, including Abhijit and divide the
number by 7. If remainder is 3 or 6 then it gives a malefic yoga. It gives failure in the venture
undertaken. Vidal yoga – if Mo is 3/6/10/13/17/20/24/27 from Su.
8. Ravi Yoga – if Mo nakshatra is 4/6/9/10/13/20 from Su nakshatra. Benefic yoga, which
destroys all malefic effects.
9. Eclipse – Nakshatra in which solar/lunar eclipse occurs should be avoided for all auspicious
works:
a. For 6 months if full eclipse
b. For 3 months if half eclipse
c. For 1 months if quarter eclipse

4. 16 ghatis (6 hours 24 mins) before and after a Sankranti is called as “Punya Kaal” and should be
avoided for all auspicious events
3. Conception should be done between 4th & 16th night from the day of menstruation.
a. Conception on even nights Son, else daughter. 8th/9th/10th/12th/14th/15th/16th
auspicious.
b. Fixed nakshatras (UP, UB, Rohini, Mrigshira, Anuradha, Hasta, Swati, Shravana,
Dhanistha, Shatbisha) are best for conception. Aggressive Nakshatras (PF, PS, PB, Bharai,
Magha) and Teekshna (Moola, Jyestha, Adra, Ashlesha) Revati, Krittika to be avoided.
c. Tithi of 1/2/3/5/7/10/12/13 are good. Rikta titha (4/9/14), 6,8,11, Amavasya, Poornima,
Bhadra to be avoided.
d. Days – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are good. Monday is medium.
e. Lagna – conception lagna should have benefics in Kendra, Trikona & malefics in 3,6,11
houses. Lagna should get aspect by Male planets (Su, Ma, Ju) & Mo should be in odd
navamsha (Rashi odd – male rashis)
f. Avoid – whole list given on page 50 –
i. Tithi / nakshatra/lagna gandant to be avoided
ii. Bhadra, malefic days
iii. Vyatipat, Vaidhriti, 1st half of Parigha yogas
g. Proper Chandra and Tara bal should be checked for both male & female:
i. Chandra Bal – Horoscope of a person to be checked for the auspicious work.
Transit Moon should not be 4,8,12 from the natal moon.
ii. Tara Bal – 9 kinds of Tara – From the Janam Tara (Nakshara) 3rd, 5th, 7th Tara
(Nakshatra) to be avoided in all 3 triads.
4. Punsavana or making potent. This is performed with the objective of getting a son & preventing
abortion. Generally performed in the 2nd or 3rd month of the pregnancy. Following
considerations are necessary for deciding a proper time to perform this samskara:
a. Lord of the month of pregnancy – it should be strong in transit (exaltation/own
sign/friend’s sign/strong navamsha). 1st month Ve, 2nd month Ma, 3rd month Ju, 4th
month Su, 5th month Mo, 6th month Sa, 7th month Me, 8th month – lord of conception
lagna, 9th month Mo, 10th month Su)

b. Auspicious nakshatras – Shravana, Hasta, Mrigshira, Anuradha, Pushya,
Punarvasu, Ashwini, Revati & Dhanista
c. Craddling or Dola-Arohan – a sub ceremony – to be performed on
10/12/16/18/32 from birth or on a benefic day (Wed, Mon, Thu, Fri) in fixed
nakshatras (UP, US, UB, Rohini), friendly nakshatras (Mrigshira, Revati, Chitra,
Anuradha) & short nakshatras (Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya, Abhijit) – 5 nakshatras
ahead and 7 nakshatras behind from the nakshatra occupied by Sun are
considered as auspicious.
d. Shashthi Pujana – on 6th day after birth to please 6th Durga (Katayani Devi) for
the well-being of the child.
2. Annaprasana or 1st feeding of child – 1st solid food to the child
a. Male child – 6/8/10 month; female child – 5/7/9/11 month after birth
b. Nakshatras – Fixed, Movable, Friendly, Short
c. Tithi – Avoid Rikta tithi (4/9/14), Nanda Tithi (1/6/11), Ashtami, Amavasya,
Dwadashi. This means 2/3/5/7/10/13/15 are good.
d. Days – Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri are auspicious.
e. Lagna – Avoid Aries, Scorpio, Pisces. Also avoid lagna of 8th rashi from natal
Mo. All other lagnas with benefic planets in 1/4/5/7/9 and malefics in 3/6/11
are considered as auspicious. There should be no planet in the 10th house and
Moon should not be placed in the 1/6/8 house.
f. Proper Chandra and Tara Shuddhi (3/5/7 nakshatra to be avoided) for child is
necessary.
3. Karna-Vedha (Ear Piercing) – to facilitate wearing of the ornaments. It is said to prevent child
from diseases related to intestine and swelling of testicles.
a. Time – 10/12/16 day ; or in 6/7/8 month; or in odd years from child birth;
generally clubbed with Mundan or Upnayana Sanskar.
b. Nakshatras – friendly, short, Shravan, Dhanishta, Punarvasu
c. Days – Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri
d. Tithi – Amavasya, Rikta to be avoided.
e. Avoid – Khar Masa (when Su in Dhanu, Meen), Tithi Kshya, Harishyana (Asadha
Shukla 11 to Kartik Shukla 11), Janam Mass (lunar month of birth), Janam Tara,
even years (2/4)
f. Lagna – benefics in Kendra, Trikona, 3rd & 11; malefic in 3/6/11 with 8th house
unoccupied. Lagna should belong to Ju / Ve with Ju in Lagna

e. After marriage of a boy, no girl within 3 generations of the family should be married
