Mod 3: Designing What You Write - Ch.
36 (Assignment)
Step 1:
Read Ch. 36 "Designing What You Write". Answer the following questions
based on the chapter.
1. What does it mean to think rhetorically about design? What kinds of
things should you consider?
In Ch. 36 "Designing What You Write” we as the reader can evaluate
that “thinking rhetorically about design" means adding visual elements
in your writing will influence your audience and have a better
understanding of your topic. Going further visual elements will
enhance your writing and give you further credibility as an author.
2. Pick one idea from the chapter that you think is relevant to your final
project: Font, Headings, Colors, Visuals. Explain one piece of advice
from that section that you will be able to use as you design your final
project.
Visuals and Headings will be a contributing factor I will be inputting
into my final project. Particularly in my case since I will be explaining a
very complex topic headings will allow me to communicate the
structure of the information needed to explain. Furthermore, this will
help readers understand how the content is organized and clear to be
able to understand the concept. The visuals will help readers
understand and even influence the audience.
3. Under the section "Putting it All Together" there are a series of tips (in
red). List these and explain each one in your own words (about a
sentence or so each).
Under "Putting it All Together" the series of tips were focus on the main
point; this meant making your main idea very clear and not losing
focus of the main idea through-out the writing.
To use evidence to support your topic; It is critical for a reader’s
credibility to provide evidence. Not only for credibility but also to be
able to explain their main idea further and persuade their audience
with certain evidence.
Address Counterarguments ; being able to address the opposing side
gives you credibility as an author but also being able to explain why
your side is better than the opposing gives you a better view and a
more well-rounded author.
Step 2:
Pick 2 examples of the genre you have chosen to use for your final project.
(For example, if you've chosen to write a letter, you'll need to find two
sample letters.)
1. One of the examples should be one that you find attractive. Analyze
what makes the design effective--consider it's use of font, colors,
visuals, etc.
One example I would love to use for visuals would be a magazine from
Discover called the “Time Travel Redux By David H Freedman” the
aspects in the visuals call your attention and drive you to want to seek
for further information not only this but it provides videos and other
visuals to be able to further explain the complex topic. The design is
very effective as it causes the audience to want to further understand
the topic and persuade them into the thesis.
2. The other example should be the same genre, but one you find less
inspiring/attractive. Analyze what you think doesn't work or could
be improved about that example.
Another example of the same genre that however it is much less
attractive in in some cases but would be “Time Travel by Cosmos” the
information provided is solid and has a variety of displays and data to
explain however too much can bore the audience end big words that
could be simplified so that the audience can understand better will
definitely help persuade them in this case.
