Assignment – I
1) Two coherent sources whose intensity is 100:1 produce interference fringes. Find the
ratio of maximum intensity to minimum intensity in the interference pattern.
2) Light of wavelength 5893A0 is reflected at nearly normal incidence from a soap film
of refractive index 1.42. What is the least thickness of the film that will appear dark?
3) Newton’s rings are observed normally in reflected light of wavelength 6000A 0. The
diameter of 10th dark ring is 0.500m. Find the radius of curvature of the lens.
4) In a Newton’s rings experiment the diameter of the 15 th ring was found to be 0.59 cm
and that of the 5th ring is 0.336 cm. If the radius of curvature of the lens is
100 cm, find the wavelength of the light.
5) Newton’s rings formed by Na light between a flint glass plate and a convex lens are
viewed normally. What will be the order of the dark ring which will have the double
the diameter of that 40th dark ring.
6) How many lines are there on a grating if the angle of diffraction is 20 ⁰ for the first
order, when light of wavelength 600nm is incident on the grating normally?
7) If two spectral lines of wavelengths 5890A⁰ and 5896A⁰ are to be seen just separated
in the first order spectrum of a grating. Find the number of lines in grating?
8) Light of wavelength 5000 A0 falls normally on a transmission grating having 15000
lines in 3 cm. Find the angle of diffraction for maximum intensity in the first order.
9) When sunlight falls on the surface of water at an angle of 53 0, The reflected light is
found to be completely plane polarized. Find the angle of refraction and refractive
index of liquid.
10) A Glass plate is to be used as a polarizer. Find the angle of polarization for it. Also,
find angle of refraction. Given µ for glass =1.54.
11) Determine the numerical aperture and acceptance angle of a step index fiber when the
core refractive index n1= 1.50 and the cladding refractive index n 2=1.48, if the light is
launched in to the fiber from air.
12) A glass fiber has a core material of refractive index 1.45 and cladding material of
refractive index 1.40. If it is surrounded by air, Compute the critical angle.
13) A) A body of mass 1 kg is moving with the velocity of 10 m/s. B) An electron of mass
10-31 kg is moving with the velocity of 10 5 m/s. What will be its de-Broglie
wavelength? Can it be detected.
14) Calculate the de-Broglie wavelength of an electron moving with the velocity 107 m/s.
15) Determine the velocity and kinetic energy of a neutron having de-Broglie wavelength
of 1 A0.
