Procedure
Developer Brand Name MR 70 Or Equivalent
- Intermixing of penetrant materials from different families or different manufacturers is not
permitted.
- If you perform the test for austenitic stainless steel the test fluid shall not contain any halogen.
- All material data sheet with expiration data to be submitted to TK Uhde prior to commence the
examination.
NOTE:
Any change of a requirement in table T-621(ASME section V- Article 6) identify as essential
variable that shall require are qualification of that procedure.
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Surface preparation:
- Surface preparation by grinding, machining or other method may be necessary where surface
irregularities could mask indication prior to each liquid penetrant examination, the surface to be
examined and all adjacent area within at least 1 in ((25mm) shall be dry and free of all dirt,
grass, lint, scale, welding flux, weld spatter, paint, oil and other extraneous matter Thys could
obscure surface openings or otherwise interfere with the examination.
- Also, typical cleaning agents which may be used are detergents, organic solvent, descaling
solutions and paint removers.
- Degreasing and ultrasonic cleaning method may be used.
5.2 Examination:
It shall be achieved as follow:
5.2.1 Method of Applying Penetrant:
Spraying or Brushing or Dipping (as per the manufacture recommendation).
5.2.2 Penetrant Dwelling Time:
The dwelling time shall be with accordance with the manufacture recommends pr specified by
the client in more restrictive manner. if it isn’t available, then following time limits shall be
used.
- Minimum dwelling time of penetrant is 10 minutes for temperature between 5°c

Procedure
- Maximum dwelling time of penetrant is 30min.
- If the penetrant allowed to dry during the examination the part must be re-cleaned and the
examination to be repeated.
5.3 Method of Removing Excess Surface Penetrant:
- After the specified penetration (dwell) time has elapsed, any penetrant remaining at the surface
shall be removed. Also taking cars to minimize removal of penetrant from discontinuities.
- Cleaning the surface from excess penetrant by flushing solvent is prohibited.
- We can remove excess penetrant by wiping with a cloth or absorbent paper. Repeat the
operation until most traces of penetrant have been removed. The remaining traces shall be
removed by lightly wiping the surface with cloth or absorbent paper moistened with solvent.
5.4 Method of Appling Developer:
Spraying (as per the manufacture recommendation).
Only wet developer shall be used
5.5 Developing Time:
Developing time shall be with accordance with the manufacturer recommends or specified by
the clint in more restrictive manner.
Developing time for final interpretation begin immediately after the wet developer is dried.
- Developer shall be applied lightly.
- If necessary additional developer may be adding aid in interpretation.
5.6 Lighting Requirements:
5.7 Either natural or artificial light however the minimum permissible lighting intensity at the
examination site is (1000LUX).
5.8 Surface Temperature:
The recommendations of the manufacture to be following. Generally, the temperature of the
penetrant and the surface of the part to be processed shall be within the range of (5c° to 52c°).
5.9 Interpretation & Evaluation:
5.9.1 Final Interpretation:

Procedure
- Final interpretation shall be made within 10 to 60 min after the requirements are satisfied. If
bleed-out does not alter the examination results, longer periods are permitted.
- If the surface to be examined is large enough to preclude complete examination within the
prescribed or established time, the examination shall be performed in increments.
5.9.2 Characterizing Indications:
- The type of discontinuities is difficult to valuate if the penetrant diffuses excessively into the
developer. If this condition occurs, close observation of the formation of indications during
application of the developer may assist in characterizing and determining the extent of the
indications.
- With a color contrast penetrant, the developer forms a reasonably uniform white coating.
Surface discontinuities are indicated by bleed-out of the penetrant which is normally a deep red
color that stains the developer. Indications with a light pink color may indicate excessive
cleaning. inadequate cleaning may leave an excessive background making interpretation
difficult.
- A minimum light intensity of 1000 LUX is required on the surface to be examined to ensur
adequate sensitivity during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light source,
technique used, and light level verification is required to be demonstrated one time,
documented, and maintained on file.
5.9.3 Evaluation:
(a)All indications shall be evaluated in terms of the acceptance standards of the referencing
Code.
(b) Discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by bleed-out of penetrant, however,
localized surface irregularities due to machining marks or other surface condition may
produce false indications.
(c)Broad areas of pigmentation which could mask indications of discontinuities are
unacceptable, and such areas shall be cleaned and re-examined.
5.10 Post cleaning:
- Post cleaning shall be achieved by wipe surface with dry cloth, flush surface with an approved
solvent cleaner. Wipe as required a clean cloth.
- Post cleaning shall be done as soon as practical after interpretations.
5.11 Acceptance Criteria:
- ASME B 31.3.

5.12 Discontinuity:
- Typical discontinuities detectable by this method are cracks, seams, labs, cold shuts, lamination,
porosity.
- If the defect is rejected, the weld shall be repaired by following the requirements of HAC repair
procedure NO: HAC-CM-G00-DC-00024
