Naxalism: A National Security Threat to India
Maoist-inspired, violent insurgent and separatist organizations that have periodically operated in
India since the mid-1960s are collectively referred to as naxalites. The phrase, which is
frequently used to refer to the Naxal movement, has also been used more generally to refer to the
communist insurgency itself. The naxalites mainly drew inspiration from Charu Mazumdar after
he established Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) based on the doctrine of armed
revolution as the only path to revolution. 1There are plenty of causes of naxalism and can range
from rural poverty to foreign influence. It affects almost 32 districts and the states of
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha have the largest concentration of Naxalite activity.
Naxalites thrive in isolated, underdeveloped places. Their core support base consists of castes
that are marginalized, tribal populations, and dispossessed peasants. The naxalites often
brainwash the youth by making them feel as alienated members of the society. They have a
variety of methods to operate and conduct an attack such as Guerilla Warfare, Political Fronts
and Human Rights Abuse. Naxalism has many impacts on the Indian Economy such as
devastating transportation systems, industrial and mining sites, and infrastructure projects. They
hinder growth in the impacted regions by extorting money from companies. Violence, inequality,
and poverty are all sustained by naxalism. Traditional village life has been disturbed, and the
local people have been divided as a result. There are plenty of Humanitarian conflicts and crises
that are a byproduct of naxalism. Naxalism frequently causes resource depletion and the internal
displacement of populations leading to refugee migrations brought on by naxalism strain host
communities' resources and they contribute to regional instability. Internally displaced people are
particularly susceptible to child labor and human trafficking because of the dire economic
circumstances. In certain places, the situation is so dire that Manmohan Singh, our previous
prime minister, compared it to a virus that threatens the whole concept of India.2 He urged the
state to combine its resources and put an end to the communist uprising, which is seen to be the
largest threat to our national security. There are plenty of problems in Combating Naxalism such

as in the arena of Terrain and Logistics. Security personnel have a tough time operating in the
Naxalite-affected areas due to the extensive woods, mountains, and rough terrain. They also rely
on shoddy infrastructure and poorly linked roadways. Security forces' use of force against
civilians and violations of human rights have damaged public confidence and stoked discontent
toward the administration. 3The Naxalites have found it simpler to gather support as a result.
There is an international perspective on the security threat posed by naxalism. Naxalism in India
is a problem that affects the entire area and how security issues are handled. In India, naxalism is
a phenomenon that has an impact on the entire region and how security-related matters are
addressed. There are few long term solutions proposed by International Conventions and Treaties
such as Naxalism cannot be solved through military means. The government needs to address the
ideological and socioeconomic factors that have led to its rise. Armed conflict cannot be used to
eradicate naxalism. The ideological and social issues that have contributed to its emergence must
be addressed by the government.
