Protection &
Conservation
of Endangered and Economically Important Species
Welcome to the HIPPCO Worksheet, an educational tool designed to help you
understand the critical factors affecting biodiversity and ecosystems worldwide.
HIPPCO stands for Habitat Loss, Invasive Species, Population, Pollution, Climate
Change, and Overharvesting—six major environmental threats that impact the health
of our planet. Through this worksheet, you will explore each of these elements, learn
about their causes and effects, and discover ways we can mitigate their impacts to
protect our natural world. Let's dive in and explore how we can be part of the
solution to preserving biodiversity for future generations.

Activity 1:
Species Diversity
Catching Up!
There are millions of different species of living things on the planet.
Biodiversity is almost always used to refer to "life on Earth" in its broadest
sense. A species is a set of individuals having the same distinct
characteristics and being able to mate and produce fertile offspring. Species
diversity refers to the number and variety of life forms present in a
biological community.
From the main idea that a variety of species is vital to sustaining life on
Earth, how important are the diverse species in your lives? Write your answer
below.
Did you know
that the top six reasons why
we are losing our biodiversity
are mainly due to human
activities? To make it clear,

Worldwide and Local Biodiversity Preservation
and Conservation Efforts
For future generations, rare and economically significant species require your care and
protection. Human activities on a worldwide scale have diminished the diversity of life on
Earth. According to the National Geographic Society, the biggest threat to the Earth's
biodiversity is the loss and degradation of species habitat. The necessity of humans and
their communities to cater for our increasing food, shelter, and water needs has been the
main driver in wildlife habitat loss in recent years. However, there are additional aspects to
consider. As the sea level rises, coastal fauna will lose their homes, and species that reside at
higher elevations will perish if they are unable to adapt rapidly enough to temperature
changes.
The [Link] reported that ninety-five percent of the region's boundary forests
have already been destroyed. Seventy to ninety percent of the native wildlife habitat in the
region has been gone, with forest loss accelerating (Butler, 2001). Many animals are risking
extinction quicker than they can be detected as part of this valuable environment gets
damaged day by day. Plant species are disappearing before they can be examined for
potential cures to today's devastating diseases.
There are several international treaties and national government laws policies help
protect Earth's biodiversity, to wit:
The 1975 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)
treaty was signed by 175 countries, which ban the hunting, capturing, and
selling of threatened or endangered species.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992 resulted in making 191
countries agree to the convention, which aims to commit and reduce the global
rate of losing biodiversity.
The Philippine Endangered Species Act (Republic Act No. 9147) is also known
as Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. The policy ensures to
conserve the country's wildlife resources and their habitat for their
sustainability.
Although the mentioned strategies may seem to be limited and not feasible solutions
for the problems humans face with the rapid loss of biodiversity, small but collective efforts
can still help in saving many species on the brink of extinction.

Make a study of the efforts that communities engage in to safeguard and conserve
endangered and economically important species in your area (barangay and municipality).
Create an environmenta-list to present your discoveries. An example is given below.
The rubric below will be used to rate your output:
Check your Understanding
AGREE OR DISAGREE: Read the following statement about global and local efforts to preserve
and conserve biodiversity. If the assertion is factual and correct, write the word AGREE. If you
disagree with the preservation and conservation efforts listed, write DISAGREE and explain
why.
1. Designating an area as a wildlife refuge aids species in increasing their reproductive
numbers.
2. By increasing the population of endangered species, such as crocodiles, and
commercially selling their parts, wildlife farms alleviate hunting pressures.
3. The Philippine Endangered Species Act (R.A. No. 9147), also known as the Wildlife
Resources Conservation and Protection Act, is a law that protects endangered species in the
Philippines. It assures the long-term conservation of the country's wildlife resources and
ecosystems.
4. In a refrigerated setting, gene or seed banks store seeds of endangered plant species.
5. Butterfly farms are set up to decrease the risk of trapping rare butterflies in the wild
by only reproducing the species that are needed for economic purposes.
