Mock Examination for S6 (Higher Tier)

CHEMISTRY PAPER 2
1 hour
This paper must be answered in English

INSTRUCTIONS

(1) This paper consists of THREE sections, Section A, Section B and Section C. Attempt ALL questions in any
TWO sections.

(2) Write your answers in the Answer Book provided. Start each question (not part of a question) on a new page.

Section A Industrial Chemistry

Answer ALL parts of the question.

1. (a) In an experiment to study the kinetics of the reaction between iodide ion and bromate ion in acidic
solution:

6I–(aq) + BrO3–(aq) + 6H+(aq) 3I2(aq) + Br–(aq) + 3H2O(l)

the time t for the formation of a very small, fixed amount of iodine in each reaction mixture was
measured. Results of four experiments are listed below:

–3
Initial concentration (mol dm )
Experiment no. t (s)
[I–(aq)] [BrO3–(aq)] [H+(aq)]

1 0.0025 0.010 0.025 42

2 0.005 0.010 0.025 21

3 0.0025 0.020 0.025 21

4 0.0025 0.010 0.050 10.5

(i) Describe and explain how the time t can be found experimentally.
(3 marks)

(ii) Deduce the order of reaction with respect to each reagent and hence write the rate equation for
the reaction.

2012 Edition Mock Exam for S6 (Higher Tier)

1. (b) Methanol is an important compound in the chemical industry. In modern manufacturing plants,
methanol is produced from syngas.

(i) Why is methanol an important compound in the chemical industry?

(1 mark)

(ii) Syngas is produced via the steam reforming of methane.

Write the chemical equation for the production of syngas from methane.
(1 mark)

(iii) Write the chemical equation for the production of methanol from syngas, and state the conditions
required.
(3 marks)

(iv) 80 years ago, manufacturing plants used the same reaction for methanol production as today but
operated at about 400 °C and 200 atmospheres.

Compare the operating conditions used in the old and new methods. Give ONE advantage of the
old method and ONE advantage of the new method. Justify your answers.
(2 marks)

(v) Suggest an advancement of the modern methanol production technology that makes the
production ‘greener’.

1. (c) The table below lists the rate constants, k, at different temperatures for the decomposition of
cyclobutane to ethene:

C4H8(g) 2C2H4(g)

Temperature (K) k (s–1)

800 0.0315

850 0.315

900 2.44

950 15.2

The relationship between rate constant k and absolute temperature T can be represented by the
Arrhenius equation:

EA
k = Ae– RT where R is the ideal gas constant;
A is the Arrhenius constant; and
EA is the activation energy.

Determine the activation energy for the reaction by plotting an appropriate graph.

–1 –1
(Ideal gas constant R = 8.31 J K mol )
