INFORMAL LETTERS
Informal letters are actually ‘personal letters.’ You can also call them ‘friendly’ letters. They are written to
friends, relatives, siblings, brothers and sisters, parents or to anyone else close and known to you.
FORMAT OF INFORMAL LETTERS
(i) Address: Sender’s address is written on the top left-hand side. The address should be complete,
accurate and up-to-date so that the person to whom the letter is written may reply back with ease.
(ii) Date: The date is written just below the sender’s address. The correct form of writing the date is
10 June, 2024 or June 10, 2024.
(iii) Greeting or Salutation: As you are writing to a person you already know; hence the greeting or
salutation can be friendly or informal. Ex- Dear Prisha, Dear Mom, Dear Papa, Dear Uncle, Dear
Mr. Sharma or Dear Mrs. Sharma etc.,
(iv) Body of the letter: This is the main part of the letter. Unlike formal letters, here you are free to
open your heart to your near and dear ones. Naturally, the content or the body of the letter
depends on the subject which forms the basis of the letter.
(v) Complimentary close: you can end personal letters with phrases like:
With lots of love
Best Wishes
Kind Regards
The complimentary close with friends, parents, brothers, sisters and relatives should be:
Yours affectionately
The complimentary close with friends and persons of your age should be:
Yours sincerely
Generally, we can start Informal or personal letters in the following manner:
• I am in receipt of your letter…..
• I haven’t heard from you since long……..
• I couldn’t reply to your letter dated…..
• I got your letter day before yesterday…..
• Hope this letter finds you happy, healthy and enjoying life………
SAMPLE LETTER
You are Ravi living in sector 16, Mall Street, Noida-201301. You want to call your friend Ajeet, who had
just made a trip to Mumbai to participate in the 20th Marriage Anniversary of your parents. Write a letter to
inform and call him to participate in this grand celebration.

I hope my letter finds you in good health, especially at such a time of chaos due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reeta told me that you went to Mumbai in March. I am glad that you took the trip much before things got
worse in our country. So how was your trip? Hope you enjoyed a lot in the Marine Drive. Please share your
pictures with me. I’d love to see them.
By the way, I am also writing to you to invite you for my parents’ 20th Marriage Anniversary party which
we will celebrate post lockdown period. So please book your tickets when the lockdown period gets over
and normal life gets restored.
Hope your parents and little sisters are doing fine. Give my regards to uncle and aunt and love to your
sister. Please stay safe and do not step outside of your house unless absolutely necessary.

1. Amit from Hyderabad has got admission in a college at Bengaluru. He has to share his room with
another boy. When he arrives at the hostel, he learns that his room mate has gone home for a few days.
Based on his observations of the room, Amit writes a letter to his friend, Sumit, about his new
roommate. As Amit, write the letter.
2. You are Raghav/ Reshma, living at 25-L, Rajender Nagar, Delhi. Write a letter to your friend Ajay
thanking him for the comfortable stay that you enjoyed with him and his family in Mussoorie.
