Exploratory Research Project On
The Importance Of Sleep In
Cognitive Health

fi
Why Is Sleep Important
• Sleep-the most important state
for the human body
• Allows the body to recharge a
rest-reach homeostasis
• Sim of this project-to further
wxplore sleep role in cognition
Acullin & Bliwise, 2014
• Relationship between sleep/
cognition and the advancement
of age
• Positive correlations between
sleep and cognition
• Improved memory consolidation
• Short sleep for adults (especially
middle aged) leads to poor
cognitive and executive control,
attention, WM, EM, etc.
Walker, 2009
• Incorporation of emotion with the
relationship between sleep and
cognition
• Combined with decreased
attention and recognition of
events, but irritability
• Temporal memory a ected
• Anatomically-posterior
hippocampus most a ected

Research Paper
• Explores the e ects of sleep extension on children
with chronic sleep reduction
• Schedule- rst 7days of normal bedtime, sleep
reduced on weekends, sleep time gradually
extended , continued for 3 weeks
• Extension group afterwards tested on reaction
time, visuospatial processing, and divided attention
• Results found that sleep extension group had
earlier bedtimes, and spent longer in bed
compared to control
• However, cognitive performance was mixed. Apart
from some changes in accuracy, performance
scores in all 3 were slightly, but not signi cantly
lower

What’s Next From Here
• How much sleep extension is too
much on the e ect of cognitive
ability?
• How would extended sleep fare
for adults (middle aged and
older) with same chronic issue as
previous study?
