1.

Warm-up (5-10 mins)

MC1: Hi everyone, and thank you all for being here today. It’s an honor for us.
MC2: I bet everyone’s feeling a bit tired after a long day, right? So let us help you
recharge!
MC2: Before we start our workshop, I would like to invite you to play a game first.
The game needs 6 players.
MC1: Now, does anyone want to come up here first? We’ll prioritize the first three
volunteers who raise their hands!
MC2:
• Situation 1: Great, we have our first three volunteers. Thank you, all three of
you!
• Situation 2: If no one volunteers, I’ll hand the mic back to MC2.
• Situation 3: If we have only one or two volunteers, I really appreciate your
enthusiasm! Don’t worry, just hang tight while we find teammates for you.
MC1: Alright, now, where are everyone’s hands? Raise your hands up! Choose a
number from 1 to 10—but make sure it’s different from the person on your right. Hold
it up for 30 seconds, and let’s all focus on the screen together.
MC2: Oh, now the six ranks have been revealed! We invite the participants with the
top six numbers to come up here with us for a warm-up. Now, those with odd
numbers (1, 3, 5) / or numbers: 1, 2, and 3, please line up in one row, and those with
the remaining numbers, please line up in another row.
MC1: Alright, both teams are now ready! Everyone, please focus your attention on
the screen to go over the game rules together.
(Play video with the game rules)
MC2: If there are no further questions, then let the game BEGIN!
MC1: Does either team have any questions?
(After 2 minutes, MC1 announces a change of turns)
(After 4 minutes)
MC2: TIME’S UP! Thank you to both teams for playing. Now, it’s time to announce
the results!
2. Introduction about ESC and the event (5 mins)
1: Do you know that ESC was founded in 2003? Yes, that’s right. Since then, ESC
has helped to create a supportive environment for all participants to develop not only
their English skills but also their confidence.
Aside from the signature “Weekly Discussion,” which is a free weekly event with
different but related topics for students to practice English, ESC also hosts many
charitable activities and contests.
2: If it is too much for you, I want to leave you with 3 adjectives when you think of
ESC, which are: fun, engaging, and non-judgmental.
ESC always strives to create fun, engaging and non-judgmental space for all
students when participating in our events and I hope that you will feel the same after
leaving today’s discussion.
1: As you can probably see, today’s workshop is about Leadership.
Our aims for organizing this workshop are to provide you with a general overview of
leadership, its advantages, and how to develop our leadership abilities.
So I have a question for you: What do you usually think of when you hear about the
word “leadership”?
2: Generally, when we think of leadership, we often think of our bosses if you’re
working or our class monitors if you’re still a student who are often loud and
demanding others to do things for them. But if I tell you that leaders are not
necessarily those people and being a great leader is more than just telling others
what to do. And that’s exactly what we will discuss today: Leadership.
2: Are you excited?
I can’t hear you. — That’s right. —Thank you for your enthusiasm.
Now, we’ll give out handouts for all of you. On the handout, there is some
information about our club, and details of today’s event.
3. Share about topic “Leadership” (10-15 mins)
MC 1: "And now, let’s move to the main event of the day…"
MC 2: "…where we’ll share about leadership skills."
MC1: First, we’ll define what “leadership” really is?
There are many definitions regarding the word “leadership,” but the fundamental
thing is that leadership is the set of characteristics that makes a good leader.
So you may ask what is a good leader?
In reality, there are many characteristics of a great leader, but there are three
qualities that they all share, which are: emotional intelligence, adaptability, and clear
communication.
They not only know their feelings but also other members and build a positive
environment with the support for everyone to work.
And in this ever-changing world, top leaders are those who stay open-minded,
embrace new ideas, and guide their teams through difficult times.
One last thing that all great leaders have in common is that they have good
communication skills. They are good at communicating, expressing their ideas
clearly, listening to everyone, or making sure there is no conflict when working
together.
Overall, leadership isn't just about having a fancy title or being the loudest voice in
the room. Leadership is about inspiring and guiding others to achieve a collective
aim. Effective leaders are those who can share a clear vision, motivate their team,
and navigate challenges with resilience.
MC2: So a question arises, which is: why do we need a leader/leadership in
studying/in our normal lives? And what are the advantages of being a good
leader?
By enhancing our leadership abilities, we spontaneously improve other skills such as
time management, conflict resolution, and communication skills. All these skills are
crucial both for students and working people.
That students need to have leadership traits for their life, becoming a good leader
can also make them to be a better person. Being a good leader, a person will be an
open - minded individual, know how to achieve their potential and strive towards
their goals.
MC2: After researching, we have gathered some benefits of being a good
leader.
The first important benefit of effective leadership is that it can help improve
productivity. Good leaders are able to provide a positive work or study environment,
motivate their fellows, and provide clear guidance. All of these will help increase the
efficiency and productivity of the team.
The second advantage of having effective leadership skills is that it can help
promote stronger organizations. Good leaders build strong teams by fostering
positive relationships, delegating responsibilities, and inspiring individuals to achieve
success.
The third benefit of being a good leader is that it can help foster innovation. Leaders
who are open to new ideas often lead to individuals thinking more creatively and
finding new ways for difficult tasks.
A McKinsey research even showed that committed innovators are evolving their
businesses at a faster pace and seeing two times the delivery from new offerings
introduced in the past three years compared to others.
Moreover, for those who are working, being a great leader helps retain employees.
When employees feel that their voices are being heard, they are more likely to be
more invested in their work, which makes the quality of their work improve.
These are just a few of the many benefits of effective leadership. The power of good
leadership can have a far-reaching impact on individuals, teams, and organizations
and is undoubtedly an essential factor for success in any field.
MC1: Next, we will look at the leader’s roles and responsibilities in a
study/work group.
A leader can take on a wide range of roles, such as manager or supervisor,
strategist, communication, organizer, etc.
Being a great leader has many benefits to oneself, but comes with a lot of
responsibilities.
An exceptional leader not only manages but coaches each team member by offering
feedback that helps a person excel in their work. Another key responsibility is to
recognize the strengths and weaknesses within the team. By knowing where each
person excels, leaders can delegate wisely, ensuring the right person is on the right
task. Equally important is the ability to identify team goals and track progress.
Identifying what success looks like will give everyone a clear path so that they can
get work done faster. Of course, when working closely together, conflict may arise.
Great leaders are not only responsible for preventing these issues but also know
how to resolve conflicts when they occur. And finally, organization is crucial. Leaders
need to keep everyone on track by managing meetings, discussions, and
documentation, ensuring that everyone knows what to do to achieve mutual
aspiration.
MC2: And we’re coming to a long-awaited part in today’s workshop, which is:
What do you need to become a good leader?
After we have shared about the advantages and benefits of being a good leader, you
may be curious about how we can develop it.
So one of the first things you can do now to develop leadership abilities is to lead
yourself.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. (Chinese proverb) In order
to lead others, you need to manage and lead yourself first. If you can’t even lead
yourself to achieve a goal of yours, how will you lead others to the group's goals,
right?
In order to manage yourself effectively, you have to be self-aware. To achieve this,
you have to reflect on yourself and analyze your emotions. For instance, when you
are mad, instead of acting on the emotion, you should stop and analyze it. This
process can help you control your emotions and make wiser decisions.
Another simple skill you can start today to practice your leadership skill is empathy
and listening. Communication is not just about talking; it is also about listening. In
our modern world, we often prefer talking to listening to what others have to say. So
after this workshop, when you talk to someone, remember to put away your phone,
be patient, and make eye contact with the person you're talking to. It is one big step
toward achieving your leadership skills.
One important thing that we want to share today that will help you in your leadership
abilities is decisiveness and adaptability. We live in a world full of uncertainties; it is
important that a leader has the ability to adapt to whatever challenges arise. We can
all practice adaptability by asking very simple questions, which are “what if?" What if
there is something wrong with our computers and we cannot meet the deadlines on
time? What if there is another pandemic that will threaten your business? By asking
these questions, we can increase our adaptability quotient, therefore improving our
ability to make quick decisions and strengthening our leadership abilities in this
changing world.
The last three things that you can develop to enhance your leadership abilities are
responsibility, emotional intelligence, and vision. A leader has to be responsible for
the team’s result, whether it is successful or failed. Next, to develop emotional
intelligence, we need to practice compassion, be open-minded, and once again
practice our listening skill.
The final skill I would like to share is vision and inspiration. A good leader has a
future vision and knows how to inspire and motivate others to achieve a unified
vision.
So that is a lot of information, so I just want you all to remember only three simple
techniques that you can start incorporating in your life right after this workshop. The
first thing is to start with self-awareness by reflecting and analyzing your emotions.
Next, practice active listening by putting away your phone and making eye contact
with the person you are talking to. Finally, improve adaptability by asking yourself
“what-if” questions, which will help you deal with unexpected challenges with ease.
So that’s the end of our sharing. We hope that all this information will be valuable to
you in the future.
4. Tea break (5 mins)
I think that we all a bit tired after our long talk, right?
So we will take a break for 5 minutes and then we will move on to the next part.
5. Discussion (20 mins)
Before we discuss, we would like you all to play a game first. You guys will be
divided into … groups, and each group will have a leader. All participants except the
leader will be given a hint, and your job is to guess the right keyword. Speaking is
not allowed. After a short period of time, hints will be exchanged among participants
by the leader. If you think that you get an answer, please raise your hand. So that’s
the rule of the game.
Is that clear everyone? Do you have any question?
MC 1: That’s all the end of the game. Now we move on to today’s discussion and
our questions are:
MC 2: What do you think the role of the leaders in the recent game was? And
what does a leader need to do to help their team achieve victory?
MC 1: So you all will be divided into … groups and each will take turn to share about
your thoughts. We will give you [10-15] minutes to do it. The time starts now.
MC2: Time is up, everyone.
6. Ending and sharing (10 mins)
Before we wrap up our discussions, I would like to listen to some of your ideas about
today’s discussion. Is there any volunteer?
I think that’s all for today. Before we end our workshop, I want to know that whether
you have any questions for us? If you do, please feel free to raise your hand.
Thank you so much for participating today’s discussion. We’re extremely grateful to
all of you for taking the time to come here and share your valuable insights with us. I
hope that all knowledge regarding “Leadership” shared today will be valuable to you
in moving forward in both your study and work.
