Task Description
You are to choose ONE natural hazard event and present a multimedia presentation to the class addressing
all the components of the task.
1. Choose one hydrological OR atmospheric natural hazard event from one of the following categories:
tropical cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons, storms, tornadoes, tsunamis or floods. You are NOT to do a
natural hazard event studied in class.
2. Investigate all the following in relation to your chosen event:
Describe the nature and location of the natural hazard event.
Explain the geographical processes involved (cause and effect)
Outline the impacts of the natural hazard event ( economic, social, environmental)
Discuss the responses of individuals, groups OR governments to the natural hazard event
Describe what will or could be done in the future to prevent further consequences of your natural
hazard.
3. Construct a presentation which should be a visual representation (avoid excessive text), accompanying a
4-5 minute presentation that will contain the majority of your information. (PowerPoint, Prezi, Video
or other- discuss with your teacher)
4. An electronic copy of your presentation and a hard copy of your speech (if you choose to use one) must
be submitted on the due date in your timetabled lesson, or late submission penalties will apply.
Context for the Task
This activity takes place in the Stage 4 unit, Water in the world and builds on student’s skills in identifying,
gathering and evaluating geographical data through a detailed examination of one natural hazard event.

You will be assessed on your ability to:
Organise and communicate your knowledge effectively
Support your ideas with relevant diagrams, photographs and maps and use geographical terms appropriately
Select appropriate information to answer specific criteria
Construct a visual presentation
Deliver a coherent and engaging presentation
In order to undertake this task you need to:
Select one natural hazard event that has occurred, ensuring that the hazard is relevant to all parts of the task
activity.
Collect and collate detailed information on this event.
Select diagrams, maps, statistics and photos which will be included as part of your response
Present this research in a structured multimedia presentation addressing all the stated areas and a 4-5 minute oral
presentation
Submit an electronic copy of the multimedia presentation and a hard copy of the speech on the due date

Presents an engaging, coherent, informative and well-structured multimedia presentation
25-30 Uses complex and relevant geographical vocabulary.
Uses and successfully integrates, a variety of relevant maps, diagrams, photographs, quotes and/or
statistics.
Presentation of 5 minutes in length.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of ONE natural hazard event.
Explains the nature, location, geographical processes, impacts, responses and future challenges related
to the hazard event.
Presents an informative, interesting, and well-structured multimedia presentation
19-24 Uses relevant geographical vocabulary.
