Forces in 3D space
A force of 500 N forms angles of 60°, 45°, and 120°, respectively, with the x, y, and z axes. Find
the A force F of magnitude 500N is directed from A (-4, 5,
components Fx, Fy, and Fz of the force.
2) to B (6, 1, -2). Find the components Fx, Fy, and Fz of
the force.
Example 1:
Example 2:
Example 3:
The magnitudes of the three forces acting on the plate are T1 = 100 kN, T2 = 80 kN, and T3 = 50 kN.
Determine the magnitude of the equivalent force R of the three forces shown.
,
The resultant of the three cable tensions acting on the flagpole is the force R = Rk. Find T1, T2
and R given
that T3= 500 N.
Example 4:
Example 5:
The tower is held in place by three cables. If the force of each cable acting on the tower is shown. x =
20m, y = 15m, Determine the resultant of the force system.
As shown in the figure, a load P is supported by the tripod. If the force is 2000 N,
1. Determine the force in member AD.
2. Determine the force in member AC.
3. Determine the force in member AB.
Example 1:
In the figure below, three cables support the 1,500 kN weight.
1. Determine the tension in cable AB.
2. Determine the tension in cable AC.
3. Determine the tension in cable AD.
Example 2:
Example 3:
Determine the tension in each of the three ropes supporting the 600-N crate.
Moment of a force in 3D space
Determine the moment of the force F about point C and the perpendicular distance between C and
the line of
action F.
Example 1:
Determine the moment of the 40-N force about each of the following axes: (a) AB; (b) CD; (c) CG;
(d) CH; and
(e) EG.
Example 2:
A rectangular plate is supported by brackets at A and B and by a wire CD. Knowing that the
tension in the
wire is 200N, determine the moment about A of the force exerted by the wire on
point C.
Seatwork:
The combined moment of P and the 20-N force about the axis GB is zero. Determine the
Seatwork:
magnitude of P.
Example 3:
The homogeneous 860-kg bar AB is supported by a ball-and-socket joint at A and two cables attached
to B. Find the tension in cable CB.
Example 4:
The homogeneous bar AB weighs 400 N. End B leans against a frictionless vertical wall and end A is
supported by a ball-and-socket joint.
1. Determine the tension in cable BC.
2. Determine the wall reaction at B.
3. Determine the total reaction at A.
Example 5:
The horizontal boom OC, which is supported by a ball-and-socket joint and two cables, carries the vertical

force P = 8000 N. Calculate TAD and TCE

O. (the weight of the boom is negligible).
Example 6:
The two bars AC and CD are homogeneous and 1200 N and 1000 N respectively. Joints A, C, and D are
ball and-sockets, and a cable is connected between B and E. Determine all forces that act on bar AC.
