INTRODUCTION
“Violence against women is an everyday reality,
Act now and forever before it’s too late”
Violence does not merely mean the application of physical force, it can be mental,
psychological and emotional as well. Violence in its broadest sense has been
described as an act of a person which encroaches upon the freedom of another.
Women have always been the most vulnerable and often exploited section of
society in any age, time, place and society. In ancient times, due to the lack of
opportunities and health facilities, the low status of women became a vicious
circle that needed to be broken to enhance the development of India. Since ages,
women have been the victims of humiliation, torture, exploitation and violence.
This project is based on the comparative study of the state of women in the
ancient vs modern era.
Violence against women was or rather is very common in many parts of this
world. This project is also based on the prose ‘Going Places’ written by ‘A.R.
Barton’, ‘Lost Spring’ written by ‘Anees Jung’ and the poem “Aunt
Jennifer’s Tiger” written by the poet ‘Andrienne Rich’.
It’s high time that we should look into this situation so that such sufferings would
come to an end.
OBJECTIVES
• Ancient period(80s, sati pratha)
• Medieval period(before and after
independence)
• Modern period(current time)
• Male dominating era
- Despite being a financial support to the family their sufferings never
Came to an end.
ACTION PLAN
For this project we have read the prose ‘Going Places’, ‘Lost Spring’ and the poem
“Aunt Jennifer’s Tiger” and took out the theme.
We also visited some villages, and slum areas and interacted with the women there; had
a word with our teachers, and fellow mates to collect their opinions about the topic.
We also read articles in the newspapers and magazines and referred to social media for
better understanding and insights.
We prepared a questionnaire and went to some slums and villages to talk to the women
about their life and condition.
The project aims at the condition of women from the ancient to the modern era. The kind
of suffering they have gone through and the harassment they have experienced. Despite
being a financial supporter of the family, it does not affect their situation in the family.
The violence caused has many reasons as follows:
➢ Cultural and traditional rituals: Sometimes the customs of the family are so
tough that lead to the denial of the women resulting in harassment and violence.
➢ Education: Education teaches them their basic rights and is aware of them.
Therefore, they oppose the norms and stand against violence.
➢ Women themselves getting suppressed: Women silently get harassed a think
about what society will think of them if they raise a voice against their husbands.
➢ Male dominating Society
➢ Greediness (dahej pratha): One of the main reasons for violence (Just because of
not receiving a demanded amount of money or goods, family members brutally burnt the
woman).

MAIN CONTENT
COMPARATIVE STUDY:
The status of women in India has undergone significant transformations
throughout history, spanning ancient, medieval, and modern eras. This essay
aims to provide a comparative analysis of the conditions experienced by women
in these distinct periods, shedding light on the evolving roles, rights, and
societal attitudes towards women in India.
Ancient Era:
In ancient India, women occupied a relatively prominent position in the
society. Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, recognized the importance of women
in domestic life and rituals. Women had access to education and were involved
in various intellectual pursuits. However, their status was not entirely
egalitarian, and patriarchal norms began to emerge.
Medieval Era:
The medieval period witnesses a shift in the status of women, influenced by the
rise of various dynasties and changing socio- cultural norms. Practices like Sati
emerged, where widows were expected to immolate themselves on their
husband’s funeral pyre. Despite these regressive customs, certain queens and
female rulers defied societal norms, showcasing resilience and leadership.
Modern Era:
The advent of colonial rule in India brought about further changes in the
condition of women. The 19th-century social reform movements, spearheaded
by figures like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, aimed to address issues like sati, child
marriage, and the lack of education for women. Post-independence, legislative
measures and constitutional provisions were introduced to uplift women's
status, granting them equal rights and opportunities.

PROJECT REPORT
STUDENT’S REFLECTIONS
This topic has been chosen for the project because unfortunately, violence and
crimes against women still exist in many parts of the world and we believe that
spreading awareness is of utmost importance and would help us tackle this
issue more effectively.
While making the project we got to know how difficult and engaging the task
was, but through this project, we got a whole new experience, Not only this but
the project gave us a better understanding of how there is a lack of awareness
about violence, crimes and problems faced by the women of our society. To
make this project more informative we also went to people asking about their
opinions, along with this we also took help from our teachers and parents as
well to make this project more effective.
It was not easy for us to talk about such a topic openly. When we went on to
people to talk about our topic, they were not so open to respond to us. But
slowly and gradually they started talking to us and told us various things.
After completing the project, we realized that we also learned how to study,
analyze, and interact with a given topic as an object.
We think that our process of creating and executing this project is as effective
and good overall, and we will apply the lessons and skills that we got to learn
in this project in future as well and will try to improve on our mistakes done
this time.
CONCLUSION
Here we have come to the end of our project on the topic of violence against
women. We had a great experience while making this project. We learnt many
new things about the topic as well as the qualities of teamwork, and how to study,
analyze and act upon a given topic. To conclude this, we would like to remind
the main points which are as follows:
1. Awareness should be spread on a broader level.
2. It should be introduced in formal education and the first step should be taken
from home.
3. It should be in daily behavior.
4. Slogan writing, candle marches and hartals, all are in vain if we actually
can’t understand the depth of the grievance.
5. Women are considered to be the backbone of the family. They are the ones
balancing everything and looking after each and everything. Henceforth, a
little appreciation for housewives can make a big difference.
6. There were 50-50 chances of being a man or a women therefore men should
be considerate of the fact if they were a woman and they could accept this kind
of torture and behavior they do with the women.
7. Respect, love and care are all women need, they should not be deprived of it.
In conclusion, addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women requires a
multifaceted approach involving societal awareness, legal reforms, and support
systems. Through this project, we have explored the alarming statistics, root causes,
and potential solutions. It is evident that fostering a culture of respect, empowering
survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable are crucial steps toward creating a
safer and more equitable world for women. As advocates for change, it is our
collective responsibility to continue the dialogue, challenge harmful norms, and work
towards a future where every woman can live free from the shadow of violence.
