ABSTRACT

This study aimed to ascertain the common factors affecting the

allowances of students with regards to their financial management and its effect

to their financial management skill. This study contains of collected date from the

respondents which are Ten (10) random student from Accountancy, Business

and Management (ABM) and Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. This study used

Grounded theory that provided theory and new insight regarding the chosen

topic. Food, Transportation, and Academic perfomances expenses affects the

allowances from Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) and Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) of Senior High School

students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. Aside from that, personal

wants and entertainment activities are included to their expenses. Respondents

stated that these expenses help them to organize and plan their expenditure by

identifying their wants and needs. However, unplanned expenses such as

sudden class contribution result to lack of money or short in budget. Most

respondents prioritize their need over wants as a way of financial managing.

Prioritizing needs and determining expenses are key ways to achieve proper

financial management.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the significance of the study, the scope and delimitations, and the

definition of terms used in the study.

Background of the Study

Recently, in-person classes were implemented as the school year 2022-

2023 starts. Besides the recurrence of face-to-face interactions, return of student

expenses is expected. To provide for the numerous school expenses, students

are given daily/weekly allowances. According to Canlas (2014), college school

students typically get P100 to P250 allowance per day. This limited allowance

given to students is spent on various school expenses. Therefore, giving the

students the responsibility to budget all their everyday school expenses only with

what is given to them. However, an overwhelming number of teenagers– 87% –

admit they don’t know much about personal finance (Tuggle, 2014). This results

in incorrect spending of student finances.

Money, as much as some people resist to admit, is very essential in

human life. Money may not buy happiness, but it gives an individual the

capability to obtain the goods and services needed to survive. Money is used to

pay for shelter, food, healthcare bills, and good education, making life possible

(Rakoczy, 2021). Money can’t buy all aspects of happiness, but it can buy

necessities to be able to sustain life.

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

One of the many necessities’ money provides is education. Education

involves several expenses, from tuition, book fees, supplies, uniform fees, to

daily allowances of students. These allowances are spent on many other

personal school expenses of students, but it is not always enough to provide for

all their personal expenses. (Kumsa, M. J., Lemu, B. N., & Nguse, T. M. 2020),

students believed that their difficulty in obtaining pocket money from family or

other funding sources contributed to their financial stress. The sad truth is that

not everyone is fortunate enough to afford their school needs and wants. That is

why having money should come with the knowledge of managing it. And with the

percentage of teenagers who lack knowledge on the subject of proper financial

management, it is most likely that students wouldn't be able to suffice their

expenses to the very limited allowances they receive.

(Kempson et al. 2006) define financial skills and ability as the knowledge

and understanding that allows people to acquire the skills to deal with everyday

financial matters and make the right choices. According to Buchenau, budgeting

is important because it helps you control your spending, track your expenses,

and save more money. Acquiring this skill may help students with their expenses.

Being a student has a lot of roles and responsibilities to take, along with

that is the different kinds of problems they face in everyday life such as academic

problems, health issues, and especially, financial problems. Having allowances

for studying means another management to initiate as a student. However,

students tend to spend their allowances incorrectly because of some certain

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

factors. Furthermore, this research is conducted to discuss the factors affecting

the allowances of students and further give knowledge to students, especially

those who are struggling financially to cope up with the various educational

needs despite the limited allowance received by students. The students have

started their face-to-face classes, this means the recurrence of student

expenses. According to Magsambol (2022), Parents' major concern as students

return to in-person classes are the food and transportation expenses. With the

continuous rise of bought goods and services, students may experience

challenges in terms of budgeting their allowances.

The research gap found to conduct of this study is the students' lack of

knowledge on managing their finances. Hence, the existing expenses of students

made the spending of their allowances done in a wrong way. On the basis of

that, this research will provide different strategies to obtain financial skills and

abilities to manage the student's finances competently.

In light of this, the researchers came up with the title, “Financial

Management: Factors Affecting the Allowances of Senior High School

Students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina.”

Significance of the Study

This research seeks to understand the difficulties faced by Senior High

School students with regards to managing their school allowances. Moreover, the

researchers ought to recommend Financial Management strategies that students

may implement to properly budget their school expenses. Conducting this study

will benefit the following:

Students. Findings of this study will be able to provide information and

knowledge to students on ways they can budget their allowances more

effectively and easily, which would be beneficial for them. According to Hamilton

(2020), Budgeting helps separate wants from needs at the same time helps

identify unnecessary expenses. Therefore, students will learn the expenses they

must prioritize, expenses that are necessary for them as a student.

Parents. Parents normally provide the allowances of students. However,

not all parents are financially stable, most have only enough to give to their

children. Results of this research could help parents lessen their worry

concerning the school expenses and lack of allowance of their children.

Administrator. Administrator guide the students in school. This study

discusses the struggles of students with budgeting their allowances due to the

many factors that affect it. This could serve as their basis to develop into a more

student-budget-friendly school environment, wherein students could spend less

and not worry about the numerous expenses of students.

Future Researchers. This research provides baseline data on the

Financial Management of the allowances of students. Therefore, this study could

expand the knowledge of future researchers with regards to the Financial

Management of allowances.

Scope and Delimitations

This research will discuss the Financial Management of Senior High

School students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina with regards to the

factors affecting their allowances and provide data gathered from the

respondents. The respondents will be selected from Accountancy, Business and

Management (ABM) and Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) Senior High School students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina in

their second semester of school year 2022-2023. Researchers will provide a

consent form for the confidentiality and privacy of the respondents as the

interview conducts to gather the data. This research will be conducted during

April to June 2023.

However, this research limits the respondents to ten (10) Senior High

School students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina to manage the time

competently. The management behavior of students had been excluded from this

study to narrow down the topic and mainly focus on their Financial Management

and factors affecting their allowances.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes a review of related literature and studies, the

conceptual model of the study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Various books, journals, studies, and other references, including the

internet, conducted locally and internationally were perused by the proponent of

this research in order to substantiate the relevance of the present study.

Related Literature.

According to Nolasco (2023), Filipino students think budgeting their

allowances is a hard thing to do. Filipino can save through bringing their own

baon and pick water over soft drinks and juice, think before buying, commute in

the cheapest way possible, buy second hand books and don't spend recklessly.

This supported the idea of researchers pertaining to the factors affecting

the allowances of students such as food and transportation. Therefore, going to

school has a lot of expenses that greatly affect the finances of the students.

Hence, bringing their own meal can help the financial skills of a student as they

manage their finances. Also, commuting in the cheapest way can help the

expenses to be lessened, in that way managing finances can be more effective.

That's why financial management should be managed in order to save money.

Money management helps students to save money as they have. As they

learn to manage their money wisely, they can also save to buy the things that

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
Rainbow Street, SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

they want to buy without asking their parents for money. Also, there are money

management mistakes that students make. Such as, not knowing where their

money is going, not having a plan for their money, not determining wants versus

needs, and succumbing to peer pressure (Franco, Juan. 2023)

This states that students often manage their finances mistakenly. Planning

is helpful for students as they handle their own finances and knowing where they

need to spend it helps them achieve financial management skills. As stated

above, determining wants versus needs helps them to manage their finances

competently. Determining wants versus needs may be hard but the basic

necessity is the more priority to spend on with their allowances.

According to Simon Mwangi (2023) Money management is an important

skill for students to learn as it can help them budget, save, and stay out of debt. It

can also help them build good financial habits and set themselves up for a bright

financial future. By learning how to manage money now, students can avoid

financial problems and improve their financial situation.

Therefore, some of the students especially in college are have knowledge

on loan accounts to save more money and to lessen their expenses to buy their

needs and wants and this will be benefited on their parents but somehow there

are some people don't have enough knowledge on managing their allowances

especially on opening their loan accounts and bank, this will be risky on the

people who don't have enough knowledge about on this field they could be get

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

into debt since there are taxes that you need to pay on bank especially the fee

every time you depositing your money. There are huge advantages when they

have knowledge on managing money, it will be beneficial to save more on

managing their expenses in their daily lives. This is important to all the students

or any human-being that is encountering the high cost of living in the country. For

instance, when they have a goal in life or they have an eagerness on themselves

to get something they want monetarily, they're going to save money to have it.

Some of the students nowadays, are saving money for their needs especially

when it comes to the academic expenses which is more efficient to start on

managing their allowances.

Related Studies

The allowances of students are mostly spent on food, academic purposes,

personal need and academic purposes. However, when it comes to personal

needs and academic purposes, students are tight (Abawag, C. F. N., et al. 2019).

The expenses occur as they go to school. Therefore, students need finances to

support them as they study to provide for their basic necessity as a student.

Students’ financial management skills needed in their everyday life. Therefore,

this research will help them to recognize their ability and skills to manage

finances.

The amount of the allowance and the total amount spent are directly

correlated. Financial management plans should be put into practice for effective

money management. The experiences that people must go through before

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

learning a general lesson that can be applied and shared make managing

finances a stepping stone. Parents should also educate their kids money

management skills so they can control their spending from a young age. (Cuyop,

K. A. M., et al. 2022).

It was stated that having allowances means having expenses. Hence,

students learn to spend their allowances with their wants and needs. Students

often make a mistake with regards to managing their allowances. On the grounds

of that, students having the lack of knowledge in financial literacy and

management made the wrong

This study analyzed budgeting habits of undergraduate students. It found

that the budgeting habits of students are different based on gender and that

significant portions of their budget are spent on shopping, eating out, mobile

phone expenditures, attending training, traveling with friends and transportation.

The study suggested that students should know how much they can spend and

how to improve their budgeting habits. (Nwe Ni Aung, Hla Hla Mon, 2020)

Having a good budgeting habit represents one of the most predictable

determinants of successful personal and economic development. If a person

does not have good budgeting habit behavior, one does not have extra money

and cannot save. Therefore, only the persons who have extra money can save

the money. Having good budgeting habit behavior is not an easy task. There are

many people who wish to save some portion of their income and they also

believe that saving is very helpful for their future. But they cannot save and they

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
Rainbow Street, SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

always postpone their saving and budgeting plan. It affects not only ordinary

people, but also those with higher-paying jobs.

According to (Engle, Tinto, & Pell Institute, 2008). Low-income students

are unable to afford the full cost of attending college and are oftentimes going

into debt for a degree they will receive. All students are able to have stable

financial situations for their needs and wants, and one way to have their own

savings is to use their credit cards for their college tuition, even though they may

not have their own credit cards. Parents need to be prepared for the needs of

their children, so it is appropriate that they start saving while still young.

This support idea from researchers says that we need to be practical in life

and that proper budgeting is the way to handle financial difficulties, especially for

parents and students. Now that the expenses are increasing, like food and

transportation, students are struggling to budget their allowances, so another

way to have proper budgeting is to use a credit card.

Students take time to fully understand proper financial management.

Therefore, students' level of financial management was moderate. To prevent

students wasting too much in spending, the proposal suggested that the

expenses of students make it savings. Furthermore, spending prudently can

prevent the stress of students as they face difficulties in life (Romizan, M. A, et al.

2021)

Until nowadays, financial management hasn't been done properly by

students as they are still adjusting to becoming young adults. Also, learning

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
Rainbow Street, SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

another thing aside from academics may be hard for them. Students have

different roles and responsibility to take, learning financial management would

help them, at least, be less problematic in their finances.

Therefore, the article said that college students are not very good at

financial management, they lack discipline in budgeting because of that they

become prone to overspending, they spend their money on things that are not

really essential or needs so they do not become disciplined when it comes to

financial management. They conducted a comparative study between students in

the US and students in Mexico, and the result was that the students there have

little knowledge when it comes to financial knowledge, they know something

when it comes to finance, but they still need to practice in their financial

management to improve and have a wise thinking about budgeting their daily

allowance just to provide and spend it correctly and efficiently.

According to Contreras, R. C. C., Olapane, E., Cataluňa, M. P., &

Buenviaje, L. C. (2021). Achieving financial liberty requires effective money

management. Filipino laborers have some sort of financial deficiency, just like

any other international worker. The purpose of this descriptive study was to

evaluate the staff's financial management at Western Visayas State University's

Kalinog campus in Iloilo, the Philippines. In order to assess her three aspects of

financial management—financial literacy, financial attitudes, and financial

management practices—the survey used a formal validated and pilot-tested

questionnaire. The respondents' degree of financial literacy was judged to be

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
Rainbow Street, SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

ordinary. This demonstrates that staff members are already competent in

managing their personal funds. According to the respondents' statements that

they "compare prices when buying" and "spend less than they earn," their

economic attitudes are generally consumer-friendly.

Therefore, it is important that the financial management system be

improved so that all staff are able to understand their finances and make sound

decisions based on this knowledge. This will help them to achieve financial

autonomy and improve their overall working conditions.

Conceptual Model of the Study

The conceptual model that guides the researchers in conducting the study

is presented in Figure 1. This study adopts the Input-Process-Output research

paradigm to guide the conduct of the entire study.

Figure 1 presents a visual summary of the research study which aims to

ascertain the factors affecting the allowances of Senior High School Students at

this contains the issue that will be discussed in this study. Such as, the common

factors affecting the allowances, under this topic are Transportation, Food and

Academic purposes. Researchers will also answer the question on how these

factors affect the students’ allowances and how they manage their allowances

despite the common factors.

The PROCESS includes the steps to be undertaken in the execution of

the research proposal. It starts with providing questionnaires to the respondents

through an interview, specifically, face-to-face interview. As the data gathered,

researchers will use thematic analysis to categorize the collected data from the

respondents. Through this, researchers will generalize their ideas and the data

that researchers are looking for will be put in the supporting idea of this research.

The OUTPUT shows the product of the study in the form of giving

suggestions on how to help them manage the students’ allowances. The

researchers are expected to meet the study’s goal through respondents’ answer

to the questions given. Researchers expect to see the financial management

issues made by the students as they manage their allowances. Hence, we will

provide on how these issues may be prevented by giving strategies and ways.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method of research used, the sources of data,

the sampling method, data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure, and

the ethical considerations.

Methods of Research

In accomplishing the objectives of the research study, the researchers will

use the research method, grounded theory. Grounded theory is a qualitative

research methodology that discovers new theories or proves existing theories

based on the data collected from the respondents of the study (Hassan, 2022).

The gathered data of this study, the factors affecting the allowances of students

together with the financial management practices of students will serve as the

basis of the researchers into proving their provided financial management theory.

Sources of Data

The data gathered needed by the investigators will be collected at

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, located at Rainbow St. cor. Russet St.

SSS Village, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The

following respondents for the study will be the Senior High School Students at

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. The researchers decided upon collecting

the data from the two Senior High School strands of PLMar, particularly the

Accounting, Business and Management (ABM) and Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strands. The researchers will be collecting

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

data from ten (10) completely random students from the said strands. However,

the student from Humanities and Social Science are excluded from the target

respondents of this research as they are in different campus of Pamantasan ng

Lungsod ng Marikina. Researchers choose the most convenient and close

students for this research’s respondents.

Sampling Method

The research made use of purposive sampling. According to Nikolopoulou

(2022), purposive sampling is a technique wherein the samples are purposely

selected for the reason that they possess the characteristics that is needed for

the research sample. The chosen sampling method for the research study will be

used to enable the researchers to gather desired and reliable data, at the same

time being able to save more time, effort, and money. The respondents will be

selected from Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) and Science,

Data Gathering Procedure

Researchers will be providing a letter of request to Pamantasan ng

Lungsod ng Marikina, the research locale, to give consent to the investigators in

conducting the study. Validated interview questions will be used by the

researchers in gathering the data from the respondents. The research title will be

introduced to students, as well as what contribution their response would make in

the success of the study. Interviews will be completely voluntary, and an

exchange price would be given to any volunteer students. Terms will be clarified

to respondents, such as providing of name will be optional and full identity and

information provided by the respondents will be confidential, before the actual

conduct of the interview. Respondents will be asked to answer with full honesty.

After conducting the interview, all collected data will be up for analysis using

thematic analysis. According to Caulfield (2019), Thematic analysis is the

analysis of qualitative data wherein the researchers identify the common

characteristics of the data gathered. Researchers would be analyzing and

categorizing the data from the respondents to come up with a theory or prove the

theory provided by the proponents.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers observed the following ethical considerations in the

gathering of the research data. Letter of request will be provided to the research

locale to give researchers permission to conduct the study. Consent forms will be

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter consists of the presentation, the analysis, and the

interpretation of data based on the chronological arrangement of problems

identified.

THEMATIC ANALYSIS

According to Clarke (2014), Thematic analysis (TA) is a method for

identifying and interpreting patterns of meaning across qualitative data. The data

will be analyzed and categorized to create a theme.

Thematic Analysis need a great observation and interpretation. With that,

familiarizing the data will help the researcher to identify the data’s characteristics.

Next is to generate initial codes, it would be easier to identify the data’s

categories when the response of respondents is summarized. After that, search

themes for the responses to categorized the idea. Next is to review the themes,

the themes and the original data must be relevant to each other. After that, define

the themes. In this part, the data must be arranged accordingly to the data and

questions. Lastly, write a narrative for interpretation of the data collected. This

method helps the researchers to be more efficient in creating ideas and themes

to summarize the interpretation of data.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are:

Transportation, Food and Academic expenses are the common factors

that affects the students’ allowances. Aside from that, personal wants of students

such as, online shopping and personal things. Entertainment activities influenced

by peers are also included to their non-academic expenses. Sudden class

contributions are one of the academic related expenses of students aside from

school supplies and project materials.

These common factors affect the financial management of student in a

way that it helps to determine where the money will be spent before hand.

Furthermore, knowing their expenses helps the students ready their plan on

spending. However, sudden class contributions affect their money management

as they lack of money or short in budget.

Students use money organizer to separate their money for spending and

for saving. Some students discipline themselves to limit their spending to obtain a

proper management. Students prioritizing the needs and determining their

expenses is one of their ways to manage their expenses.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions, it is recommended that:

1. Students. It is important for students to research and understand the

criteria for receiving allowances in order to make informed decisions about

their education and financial situation.

2. Parents. Parents of students can use the findings of this research to

provide a better allowance for students that they can use to provide for

their school expenses. Parents should incorporate the allowance they give

to students to the amount they need to provide for their school expenses.

That way student’s struggles of budgeting their allowances due to the

various expenses they have would lessen.

1. Administrator. Provide a seminar for financial literacy and financial

management for students.

2. Future researcher. Develop deeper knowledge on how expensive school

projects and funds affect the student’s budget for other school necessities

and the management of their allowances
