Data Security on Social Media Platforms

Between (the year) 2018 and 2021, social media platform
Facebook (now 'Meta') faced/encountered four separate data
breaches/leaks, resulting in the leak of personal information of
millions of its users' names, phone numbers, email addresses,
birth dates, passwords, private chats, photos and interests.
These data breaches originated/stemmed from various factors
such as insufficient data protection measures, cyber/phishing
attacks, insider threats and software and hardware vulnerabilities/
weaknesses, highlighting/emphasizing the risks associated/linked
with centralized data storage on large social media platforms like
Facebook.
Hackers misuse/exploit these data leaks to steal identities and (to)
access users' sensitive personal data, often selling the data to
advertisers without our consent/wish, as seen in the Facebook-
Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018, in which/wherein users' data
was accumulated/harvested by Facebook and sold to British
consulting firm Cambridge Analytica for political advertising.
These repeated data leaks from Facebook emphasize the need for
stricter data regulations to safeguard/protect user privacy and
data security on social media platforms. While Facebook has
promised/pledged to enhance its security and privacy measures,
restoring the faith/trust of the users in its platform(s) requires
strengthening of the company's data protection infrastructures
and prioritizing privacy over profits.
