Terms Every Ecologist Should Know!
1. The study of the interaction of living things with each other and with the
abiotic (non-living) factors in their environment
2 The final organism in a food chain
3. A step-by-step sequence linking organisms that feed on each other,
starting with a food source (producers) and continuing with animals and
other living things that feed on the plants and on each other (consumers)
4. An autotroph (self-feeder); an organism that uses photosynthesis or
another form of chemical synthesis to make its own food
5. A heterotroph (other-feeder); an organism that must eat producers or other
consumers to survive
6. An animal that eats plants (eg. deer, rabbits etc.)
7. An animal that eats both plans and animas (eg. raccoons, humans, bears)
8. An animal that eats other animals (eg. lion, sharks)
9. Waste from plants and animals, including their dead remains. This is
important in terms of recycling matter back into the environment.
10. An organism that feeds on detritus. This helps to release nutrients back into
the soil and water where they can be used by other organisms.
11. Non-living factors in the environment (water, air, temperature etc.)
12. All of the members of a species living in the same ecosystem (eg. all the
trout in a lake)
13. The collection of all the populations of all the species in an ecosystem (eg.
all of the different species of fish, frogs, insects etc. in a lake)
14. The living component of the environment
15. When there is a great variety of organisms in an area
16. A defined area where certain populations interact
17. A specific role/place occupied by an organism in the environment
18. The conditions required for an organism to live
19. Complex set of interactions between organisms; more complicated than a
food chain
20. An organism that hunts other organisms
21. An organism that gets hunted by other organism
22. An organism that lives off food hunted by other organisms
1. Abiotic 18. Prey
2. Biotic 19. Producer
3. Biodiversity 20. Population
4. Community 21. Scavenger
5. Consumer 22. Top carnivore
6. Carnivore
