Health problems caused by smoking is still a serious case that is faced by Indonesia.
Cigarettes causes chronic respiratory diseases, and in the worst cases, leads to death (Mahyar
Suara et al., 2020). Smoking is indeed a creates a major health issue, however, despite
society’s awareness towards the risks taken when smoking, they prefer to pretend blind and
continue smoking. Most of the times, though, it’s not that they do not want to; they just
cannot bring themselves to do so. Luckily, there are many alternatives for those who might
want to stop smoking, as an example, through vaping. Vaping not only helps smokers with
quitting from smoking, but it also minimizes the health risks that comes with the
consumption of conventional cigarettes. Although there might be debate regarding the safety
of vaping, numerous of studies has shown that vaping is considered the lesser evil (Pratama et
al., 2022). These studies states that vaping is much better regarding to their lesser and
controlled nicotine usage, and how they use lesser chemicals than cigarettes does.
Vape is considered better in the terms of their nicotine dosage and control.
Vape liquids consists of a liquefied nicotine usually paired with artificial flavoring
which could vary. The nicotine dosage of these liquids is usually written on the label
of the liquid. Therefore, the cigarette addict could use the vape when they feel
depraved of nicotine, and immediately stop once their nicotine intake requirement for
their body is met. The World Health Organization (WHO) nowadays has consistently
highlighted that vape is very helpful in regulating the nicotine consumption of an
addict as it clearly states the level of nicotine that a liquid could have. According to
Hartmann-Boyce as well (2018), vape are much easier to be used if someone wants
to be rehabilitated from the fixation of nicotine consumption. They taste better too,
and have much more variety in the taste department; bubble gum is one of the
popular flavor.
Vaping is better because it does not contain dangerous chemicals like those
contained in cigarettes. As I mentioned before, the reason vaping is safer than
smoking is because using vape does not burn like consuming cigarettes so it does
not contain tar and carbon monoxide. However, vape uses a liquid evaporation
process so it doesn't produce tar. Tar produced through the burning process of
tobacco can cause various deadly diseases such as heart and lung problems, cell
damage, and fertility problems. Vaping produces substances that are much safer
than cigarettes and safer for blood vessels, in contrast to cigarettes which damage
blood vessels (Corona et al., 2020). This research can prove that healthy blood
vessels will prevent heart disease and maintain fertility. Therefore, vaping is better
than smoking because vaping does not produce carbon monoxide which, if the
content is inhaled by our red blood cells, will carry it to the heart and cause
weakening of muscle function and decreased heart function. Smoking is something
that must be considered because cigarettes contain ingredients that are dangerous
to health, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and carcinogenic radical
compounds. So, vaping is safer from dangerous substances and avoids diseases
caused by the ingredients in cigarettes.
Many people say that the sensation of holding, sucking, and the taste when
vaping is different from smoking, so vaping cannot replace cigarettes (McKeganey &
Barnard, 2018). This sometimes makes smokers long for a cigarette between their
fingers, which is the right size to hold and the characteristic taste of cigarettes when
smoked has an addictive taste that vaping cannot replace. That's not true because
vapes are very flexible devices. We can regulate the flow of air that comes out so
that we get the sensation we want. Not only that, vapes are also very diverse in
terms of shape, size and use. In terms of size, there are vapes that are shaped like
cigarettes so that when we smoke them we can feel the sensation of consuming a
cigarette and in terms of function, there are also vapes that are intended as everyday
or contest tools. Vape as an everyday device provides comfort for its users, provides
a sufficient dose of nicotine, and provides the right taste sensation, vape as a
contest or competition, this device has started to put aside the comfort side but
focuses on the energy that is released, this is what this device is aimed at for
competitions such as cloud chasing and vape tricks. In terms of price, vapes can be
said to be cheaper because vapes can last a long time and are not disposable like
cigarettes, we only need to spend money to buy the vape and liquid at first, then the
next time we just need to refill the liquid.
In conclusion, the evidence carefully examined throughout this discourse
strongly echoes the statement that vaping is a better alternative to cigarettes,
especially in the midst of Indonesia's continued struggle against smoking-related
health problems. The dire health consequences posed by traditional cigarettes,
including the threat of respiratory disease and death, underscore the need for more
effective alternatives. Vaping, has the ability to facilitate smoking cessation while
mitigating health risks by strictly controlling nicotine intake so that it can manage
addiction. This is also supported by leading health authorities such as the World
Health Organization. In addition, the absence of dangerous chemicals such as tar
and carbon monoxide in vaping liquid further confirms its superiority over
conventional cigarettes. These devices have appeal because they can mimic the
sensory experience of smoking, the device has a long life with regular liquid charges,
and is even safer to consume, necessitating a paradigm shift in attitudes towards
smoking cessation. As Indonesia grapples with the ongoing health burden of
smoking, supporting vaping as a viable option aligns with the importance of
safeguarding public health by offering smokers a realistic path to a healthier lifestyle.
