History of Yoga
The history of yoga can be traced back over 5,000 years to the Indus Valley civilization in ancient
India. It was developed as a means to attain spiritual enlightenment and self-realization. The
earliest yogic teachings are found in the sacred texts of India, particularly in the Vedas and
Upanishads. These texts contain the philosophical foundations of yoga, emphasizing the unity of
the individual soul (Atman) with the universal consciousness (Brahman). Also, Bhagvat Gita
contains reference for yoga.

Patanjali around 200 CE. This seminal work laid the groundwork for classical yoga and outlined
the eight limbs of yoga, which include moral and ethical principles, physical postures (asanas),

mental and emotional health. It also helps in better functioning of all the systems of the body.
