The French Common Usage Dictionary lists the most frequently used French words, gives their most important
meanings, and illustrates their use.
3. These meaningsare illustrated, wherever necessary,by means of everyday phrases and sentences.Where there is no
close English equivalent for a French word or where the English equivalent has several different meanings, the
context of the illustrative sentences helps to make the meaning clear.
4. Each important word is followed by the everyday expressionsin which it most frequently occurs. The Common
Usage Dictionary serves accordingly as a phrase book or conversation guide: it contains thousands of everyday
sentences which are of practical importance (for traveling, correspondence, etc.) or which serve as illustrationsof
the grammatical features of current written and spoken French. The Common Usage Dictionary should, therefore,
prove helpful both to beginnerswho are building up their vocabularyand to advanced students who want to perfect
their command of colloquial French.
5. In translating the French phrases and sentences, an attempt has been made to give not a mere translation but an
equivalent—that is, what an English speaker would say in the same situation. (Literal translations have been added
to help the beginner.) The user is thus furnished with numerous examples of how common French expressions(par-
ticularly
very idiomatic
the and the very colloquial ones) can best be translated into English. This feature makes the
Common Usage Dictionary especially useful for translation work.
6. The English-Frenchpart contains the most common English words and their French equivalents. By consulting the
sentences given under the French word in the French-Englishpart, the reader can observe whether the French word
always translates the English one or whether it does so only in certain cases.
EXPLANATORY NOTES
In written French, capital letters do not generally show an accent. However, for precision's sake, we have
included all appropriate accent marks on every word entry. In the sample sentences we have followed the normal
French practice of omitting accents on capital letters.
