Company Overview:
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., was created in 2009 to develop and deploy autonomous technology for the
Google Drive car project. The company operates in a few cities in the United States, like Phoenix and San
Francisco, but hasn’t set up any base in Canada.
Scope & Purpose of Case Study:
The purpose of the case study is to track the project's progress, checking compliance with the regulatory
environment, challenges, and the prospects for deploying Google self-drive cars in Canada.
Milestones:
Their initial deployment took place in Phoenix, Arizona, where the first successful ride of a Google
driverless car was observed.
Waymo has also announced its intentions to expand the autonomous vehicle service to other cities in the
U.S., including Los Angeles and Austin. However, there is still no update on their official launch in
Canadian cities.
Transport Canada is working closely on the framework to allow autonomous vehicles on Canadian
highways, yet no autonomous vehicle project has been initiated on Canadian highways.

Schedule Overview
While there is no official timeline for the Google Driverless Car launch in Canada, the
predicted steps include:
Regulatory Approvals: Securing necessary regulatory approvals from
Transport Canada and provincial authorities. (2009)
Pilot Projects: Pilot projects are initiated to test autonomous vehicle
technology under Canadian road conditions. (2016 - 2018)
Commercial Launch: Launching commercial services following successful
pilot projects and regulatory approvals, similar to the Google Driverless Car
One service in the U.S. (2022 - 2023)
Status: Red Amber Green
Challenges:
Regulatory Approvals Ensuring compliance with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards
Addressing liability, licensing, and insurance issues.
Safety and Cybersecurity We are developing robust safety measures and protections against
potential cybersecurity threats.
Public Acceptance We are building public trust and acceptance of autonomous
vehicles through education and transparent communication about
safety benefits.

risk of delay in project completion
Considering the above risk analysis table, the project risk status would be “Amber,” a
moderate level of risk. However, some critical areas require attention, like technical and
external risks, which require close monitoring to prevent these risks from converting into
more severe issues as these can become roadblocks to project success if not addressed
effectively.
