Exam Skills – Interpreting Data

Learning outcomes Numeracy Objective
I will be able to:
State simple conclusions from tables and graphs Ensure graphs and tables have titles
and units.

Simple Conclusions

The perfect CONCLUSION should start:

stays the same

(3rd mark)
More detailed conclusions

You could have to write

conclusions from graphs as
well.

As the pH increased the

time for no starch to be

More detailed conclusions

NEVER use the word

IT in a conclusion.
As the area increases, it
increases.

What increases?

If there is any doubt you

won’t get the mark.

From every drop of

potassium chloride solution
the relative conductivity os
solution goes up 90
Directly Proportional

Data is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL if the graph

would come out as a STRAIGHT LINE through the
origin…

Or if the
numbers in the
table double in
both columns
Directly Proportional

When 10 doubles to 20, 2 doubles to 4

But when 20 doubles to 40, 4 doesn’t double to 8 (it
goes to 16)
So the data is NOT directly proportional
Directly Proportional
Describe and Explain

DESCRIBE means say WHAT is

happening
This type of question DOES NOT need any
science knowledge because you just say
what the graph, table or diagram shows.
EASY

EXPLAIN means say WHY it is

knowledge. EASY… if you’ve revised.

the graph
The rate of photosynthesis
increases as the light intensity
goes up

Explain the trend

shown in the
graph

The gradient goes up, this means that at the

beginning is increasing but then stops and
continues with a straight line, that means it
arrive to their maximum rate of
photosynthesis
