Motion – Test Revision
1. What is the difference between “distance” and “displacement”?
Distance is the measure of how far an object has travelled from point a to point b in total. It is therefore a scalar
quantity and only has magnitude but no direction. However, displacement, on the other hand is a measure of
how far point a is from point b using the shortest possible route. Since it also has direction, it is a vector quantity
and has both magnitude and direction.

2. What do the terms “scalar” and “vector” mean? Give an example of both.
Scalar quantities only have a measure of magnitude, not direction such as distance and speed. Vector
quantities, on the other hand, have both magnitude and direction such as velocity and displacement.

3. In the displacement-time graph below:
a) Describe the motion shown.
The object travelled 4 metres north in 4 seconds, remained stationary for 2 seconds, travelled south for 8 metres
and then remained stationary for 3 seconds.

4. In the speed-time graph below, calculate:
a) Total distance = 64m
b) Acceleration between 0 and 4 seconds: 2m/s^2
c) Average speed:6.4m/s
5. Calculate the speed of an object that travels 2000 m in 60 seconds (write out the formula, show working out,
include units). 33.33m/s
6. How do you convert m/s to km/h? Multiply by 3.6.

7. What is the distance covered if an car travels at 85 km/h for 65 seconds. Answer in m/s (write out formula
and conversions, show all working out, include units).

A. Accelerating _______________________________
B. Constant speed_______________________________
C. Decelerating _______________________________
9. What is a ticker timer used for? What do the dots on the ticker tape represent? How can you tell by looking
at the dots on the ticker tape if an object is accelerating, decelerating or at constant speed?
