Conduit installations

Conduits a tube, channel or pipe in which insulated conductors are

contained. The conduit, in effect, replaces the PVC outer sheath of a
cable, providing mechanical protection for the insulated conductors. A
conduit Installation can be rewired easily or altered at any time, and this
flexibility, Coupled with mechanical protection, makes conduit installations
popular for commercial and industrial applications. There are three types
of conduit Used in electrical installation work:

3.2 Flexible Conduit

For final connections to motors, or any similar equipment liable to

vibration, it is usual to use pliable plastic or flexible metallic conduit so as
to provide for movement. It also prevents any noise or vibration being
transmitted from the motor, or the machine to which it may be coupled, to
other parts of the building through the conduit system. This flexible
conduit should preferably be of the watertight pattern and should be
connected to the conduit by means of suitable adaptors.

These adaptors are made to screw on to the conduit to secure the flexible
tubing. A sound connection is essential, as otherwise it is likely to become
detached and expose the cables to mechanical damage.

The use of flexible metallic tubing which is covered with a PVC sleeving is
recommended, as this outer protection prevents oil from causing damage
to the rubber insertion in the joints of the tubing. An alternative is to use
pliable plastic conduit, and, in either case, an appropriate CPC must be
provided Metallic conduit.

CONDUIT BENDING

Conduit bend is an art; and a neat professional bend is the sin of

the crafts person. The fundamentals and basic instruction can be thought;
but practice is the only way of mastering the bending process. A few quick
and accurate measurements; a mark or two on the conduit; and a little
effort and muscle can transform a strait 10- ft length of conduit or tubing
in to a 900 bend, an offset, or a back to back bend that will fit perfectly
when truly accurate measurements are taken, precise marks are placed
on the conduit to be bent, the proper degree of bend is made, and care is
taken when during the bending .to accomplish this, you need the
necessary tools.

Types of bending:

i. 900 bend
ii. Offset bend
iii. Saddle bend

i. 900 bend
As the name implies, it is bent a 900 angle from the original direction.
This is sometimes referred to as a stub or stub up.

OFFSET BENDS
An offset bend is two equal bends in opposite directions. It is used to
avoid contacting a part of the structure or to bring the conduit out from
the structure to match a knockout in a box or panel. The angle of the bend
in an offset depends on several things; how much offset is needed, how

much room there is where the offset is going to be placed, and the
type of obstacle you are avoiding.

Fig. Bending an offset.

Conduit Accessories
Fixing conduit

The following Figure shows the common methods used for

securing or fixing conduit. Crumpets are used for securing conduit in place
prior to covering with plaster. Spacer-bar types are often used to space
the conduit out from a wall in order to avoid the need for ‘sets’
Conduit supports.
Distance saddles space the conduit far enough from the fixing surface
to prevent dust from collecting between the conduit and the surface. They
were in the past often used in hospitals when they were known as hospital
saddles.

(Conduit; are one of the electrical installation accessories or material.

it used to protect the installation from mechanical damage., shock., etc

- is tube or pipe in which insulated conductors are contained

There are two types of conduit

1; Flexible conduit

2; non flexible conduit(Rigid conduit)

Flexible conduit; it used to bending by hand

Rigid conduit; it used to bending by heat Conduit bending; is an art

neat professional bend is the sin of the crafts person.

_Bend is to change the direction of conduit.

Conduit Boxes is in surface conduit wiring as well as concealed conduit wiring.

There are three types of conduit boxes.

1,out let box

2, junction box

3,Inspection box

1,out let boxes; are used for providing connection to the light point( switch
point) socket, fan and others point

2, junction boxes; are used for housing junction of cables

-The size of junction boxes are 85 cm

-The size box out let boxes are 65cm.

3, Inspection box; are used for gulling of cables in to the conductor.
