PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION
A. General: Assemble and install ductwork in accordance with recognized
industry practices which will achieve airtight and noiseless systems, capable of
performing each indicated service. Install each run with minimum 1/8"
misalignment tolerance and with internal surfaces smooth. Support ducts rigidly
with suitable ties, braces, hangers and anchors of type which will hold ducts
true-to-shape and to prevent buckling.
B. Seal ductwork, after installation, in accordance with recommendations of
SMACNA.
C. Supply concrete inserts for installation by others during casting for support of
ductwork, as required to avoid delays in work.
D. Complete fabrication of work at the Project site as necessary to match shop
fabricated work and accommodate installation requirements.
E. Locate ductwork runs, except as otherwise indicated, vertically and horizontally
and avoids diagonal runs wherever possible. Locate runs as indicated by
diagrams, details and notations or, if not otherwise indicated, run ductwork in
shortest route which does not obstruct usable space or block access for servicing
building and its equipment. Hold ducts close to walls, overhead construction,
columns, and other structural and permanent enclosure elements of building.
Limit clearance to 1/2" where furring is shown for enclosure or concealment of
ducts, but allow for insulation thickness, if any. Where possible, locate
insulated ductwork for 1" clearance outside of insulation. Wherever possible in
finished and occupied spaces, conceal ductwork from view, by locating in
mechanical shafts, hollow wall construction or above suspended ceilings. Do
not encase horizontal runs in solid partitions, except as specifically shown.
Coordinate layout with suspended ceiling and lighting layouts and similar
finished work.
F. Where ducts pass through interior partitions and exterior walls, conceal space
between construction opening and duct or duct-plus-insulation with sheet metal
flanges of same gauge as duct. Overlap opening on 4 sides by at least 1-1/2".
G. Coordinate duct installations with installation of accessories, dampers, coil
frames, equipment, controls and other associated work of ductwork system.
H. Support ductwork in manner complying with SMACNA.
I. Provide openings in ductwork where required to accommodate thermometers and
controllers. Provide pilot tube openings where required for testing of systems,
complete with metal can with spring device or screw to ensure against air leakage.
Where openings are provided in insulated ductwork, install insulation material
inside a metal ring.
J. Locate ducts with sufficient space around equipment to allow normal operating
and maintenance activities.
K. Set plenum doors 6 to 12 inches (150 to 3300mm) above floor. Arrange door
swing so that fan static pressure holds door in closed position.
L. Connect terminal units to ducts directly or with one-foot (300-mm) maximum
length of flexible duct. Do not use flexible duct to change direction.
M. During construction provides temporary closures of metal or taped polyethylene
on open ductwork to prevent construction dust from entering ductwork system.

3.03 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. Clean ductwork internally, unit-by-unit as it is installed, of dust and debris. Clean
external surfaces of foreign substances, which might cause corrosive deterioration
of metal or, where ductwork is to be painted, might interfere with painting or
cause paint deterioration.
B. Strip protective papers from stainless ductwork surfaces, and repair finish
wherever it has been damaged.
C. Clean duct system and force air at sufficient velocity through duct to remove
accumulated dust. To obtain sufficient air, clean half the system at a time.
Protect equipment, which may be harmed by excessive dirt with temporary filters,
or bypass during cleaning.

which may be harmed by excessive dirt with filters, or bypass during cleaning.
Provide adequate access into ductwork for cleaning purposes.
