10. Speak or write on the following situations.


1) You are planning a party to celebrate your birthday with your classmates. What
shops will you go to and what kind of food will you buy to make sandwiches,
vegetable salad and fruit salad, to bake a big birthday cake for 10 people?
2) You are at a department store looking for some nice present for your friend
who is 12 years old in a couple of days. Make up a dialogue with a shop-
assistant asking him/her to help you in making the best choice.
3) Imagine that you are shopping for stationary before the beginning of the school
year. Write a dialogue with a shop-assistant.
4) Imagine that your sister/brother is going to get married soon. Make up a
conversation with your mother in which you are discussing what can be given
as a wedding-present. Be sure to mention various kinds of shops in which each
particular thing can be bought.
5) You are at the department store. You want to buy a lot of presents for your
family. Make up conversations with the shop-assistants of various departments.
6) Imagine that you have invited your friends to your birthday party. Write a
dialogue with your mother in which you discuss the things you would like to
cook and buy for it.
7) Imagine that you are doing Christmas shopping. You are to buy presents for
each member of your family, but you can’t afford expensive things. Make up a
dialogue with a shop-assistant and write it down.

11.Scrambled Dialogues. There is one dialogue hidden in the four sentences
which have been scrambled. Make up a dialogue, then practise it with your
partner.

17.What to say and how to behave in a restaurant. Match the dialogues “At a
Restaurant” (a—h) with the headings (1—8).

1)Arriving.
When you come to a restaurant, café or pub, don’t look for a table yourself. Wait to
be seated. The head-waiter or a waiter will necessarily come up to you, offer you a
table and show you to your seat.
2)Ordering Drinks.
The waiter hands in a wine list to each customer. In first-class restaurants they have
separate menus for wine and food. Don’t be surprised if you don’t find a cloakroom
in the restaurant. Most restaurants, and, of course, cafés and pubs don’t have them.
Customers usually put their coats on the back of their chairs or elsewhere.
3)Ordering Your Meal.
The waiter hands in a menu to each customer. Some minutes later he comes back.

18.Comment and write on the following situations.


a) Your English friends have come to your place as you promised them a
traditional Ukrainian dinner. Write a conversation at the table in which your friends
ask questions about food, and you tell them everything you know about food.
b) Read the menu and write a conversation between a customer who chooses
some dishes from the menu and a waiter.
Starters: meat salad, crab salad, tomato soup, onion soup.
Main course: roast beef, chicken grill, fish pie, fried potatoes.
Dessert: coffee, fruit salad, apple pie, ice-cream.
с) What traditional dishes are usually served in you r family when you invite some-
one for a holiday dinner? (Birthday, New Year’s Day, Christmas, etc.)
Can you explain what they are made of? Give the recipe for your favourite dish.
