Let Us Study
Bandaging Techniques for Unintentional Injuries

BANDAGE
• It is a piece of cloth or material that is used to:
1. Hold a dressing in place
2. Prevent or reduce swelling
3. Apply direct pressure to control bleeding
4. Provide support and stability for an extremity

Three Main Types of Bandage

• Ace Bandage - it is a stretchable bandage that secures dressing.
• Tubular Bandage – it is a soft elastic cotton use for joints or hold
dressing.
• Triangular Bandage – it is clean cloth with triangle form that use
for compress, support for pressure and support sling. There are
two phases of bandaging:
1. Open Phase – use for larger areas to cover like chest,
back, head and also for making arm sling.
2. Cravat Phase – use for applying pressure direct to the
wound. The more the narrow the cravat the more
pressure it gives.

TECHNIQUES IN BANDAGING
1. Put sterilized dressing on the wound.
2. Bandaging depends on the size and location of the wound.
3. Bandage the wounded area firmly just enough not to restrict the blood
circulation.
4. Be gentle while wrapping the bandage around the wounded area and
secure the broken bone if there is any.
5. Use square knot in tying the bandage. You can use clip or tape. Make
sure it does not touch the skin.

2
Square Knot (Left over Right, Right over Left)

6. Check regularly the area and ensure that it is still comfortable and
firmly secured since most of the injuries swell
