What I Can Do
SPOLIARIUM
The Spoliarium is painted by renowned artist named Juan Luna Spoliarium is made and
submitted to the Exposicion national de bellas artes in the year 1884 in madrid. Where In spoliarium
garnered a gold medal, Juan Luna spent his eight months in completing this painting | depicts bloodied
bodies of gladiators. With this work Of Juan Luna he gained his great popularity among the Filipino.
When we see the Spoliarium First thing that we will notice is it’s size. It’s in the size of 4.222m in
height and 7.675m in width. No doubt that the viewer of the painting will be amazed and overwhelmed
by It's sire and mesmerized by It’s majestic aura. This painting was the largest painting in the Philippines
so far. The next thing we will notice Is the color he used. Most of the color in the painting is in shade of
black and brown: there are also a touch of white, blue, and red The color scheme enhance the
naturalism and the realistic of the painting.
The Spoliarium depicts an event during the Roman Empire. It's give prominence to the dying
gladiator who were drawn as slave and stripped of in their garments and weaponry, once a symbol of
greatness. A true downfall, being dragged to the pile of other gladiator corpses. A cheering crowd
Screaming for blood can be notice to the left part of painting because romans believes that the blood of
a dead gladiators had healing properties. Perhaps that the reason for their eagerness and excitement in
their expression. In contrast in the left side of the painting, the figure in the right side are darkened and
shadowy presenting a sombre mood. We can see an old man hold up a lamp or torch perhaps searching
for his son and 2 woman is in crouched mourning over a dead body.
The painting shows a tragic event it also hold a differ meaning especially for the Filipinos in the
time of Spanish colonization . According to some art experts the fallen gladiators who are being dragged
in the painting represents the Filipino people and the men dragging them represent the Spanish rule. it
concluded that the woman who is in crouch and mourning over a dead body is the inang bayan who for
her Philippines. The blood thirsty crowd represent the Filipino citizen who had the power to do
something for our country, yet stayed as bystander watching the downfall of our nation. the Spollarium
have excellently portrayed the essence of the political, social, and moral lives of the Filipino during the
period of the Spaniard colonization. Spoliarium is painted to awaken the Filipinos for ignorance,
blindness, mental darkness and oppression.
Spoliarium is currently hang in the main gallery at the ground floor of the national museum of
fine arts in Manila. Luna’s Spoliarium will forever have a spot as one of the most remarkable treasures of
the Philippine Arts because of its significance as a subject, brilliance as an artwork, and Splendor as a
masterpiece. It Is a milestone touching the hearts of true Filipinos and it makes our loud disposition as 8
country known for the unwary masses. Truly, the Spoliarium is a painting to be celebrated by the
Filipino.
