Section R1 (13 marks) Marks
Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded

The Jackfruit in Tijuca National Park

Tijuca National Park is an ‘urban rainforest’, so-called because it grows within the city
of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Locals and tourists enjoy visiting the park, which is the largest
of its kind in the world, but recently there have been concerns about travelling through

r
it. Locals are used to wildlife roaming through the forest, and these species are usually

pe
not dangerous. However, it is a large fruit known as jackfruit that poses a threat. When
people head into the park, they need to be aware of the danger of falling fruit.

Pa
The jackfruit is the world’s largest tree-borne fruit. The biggest ones measure 60 cm
long, and simply holding one is challenging, as the weight can exceed 18 kg. Despite
thriving in Brazil, it is not native to the country. Seedlings of jackfruit, brought in by
Portuguese traders returning from their travels in India several centuries ago, took root

e
very quickly in the soil and spread.

pl
Tijuca National Park is extremely popular, as the wide paths provide space for walkers
and cyclists to exercise. Recently, however, a cyclist was nearly killed after being

m
knocked off his bike by a falling fruit. News of the incident spread through the cycling
community and resulted in demands to have the jack trees removed from the park. With

Sa
over 2,000 among the neighbouring 10,000 trees, this is proving to be a challenging task,
although the Rio Cycling Commission are keen to succeed. One resident, Marisa Furtado,
has suggested an alternative. She has set out to make the unpopular fruit more accepted.
Furtado gathers and sells jackfruits within the local community, donating unsold ones to
ns
charities, along with recipes to support cooking them properly. Rather than kill the trees,
she wants to harvest the fruit to feed the population.
io

In Europe, where vegetarianism is on the rise, jackfruit is popular because of its texture
and the fact it can be used as a meat substitute. It is plentiful in Tijuca National Park,
at

making it an economical food source. For this reason, consumption is increasing in Rio.
However, meat is still very popular here, and jackfruit is dismissed by many as being a
in

food consumed by the poor. Marisa Furtado is having to work hard to try and make more
people aware of its potential as a ‘superfood’ with very nutritious qualities.
