Report on Swachhta Hi Seva (SHS) Campaign 2024

Organized by the Environment Club, Assam Don Bosco University, Azara,


Guwahati

1. Objective
The campaign aimed to involve Assam Don Bosco University in the Swachhta Hi Seva
(SHS) Campaign 2024, a nationwide initiative led by the Government of India, promoting
cleanliness and community engagement.
2. Pre-Event Planning and Preparation
On September 19, 2024, a planning meeting was held to discuss and coordinate the activities
for the SHS campaign. Key attendees included:
1. Fr. Joseph Nellanatt, Pro Vice Chancellor, ADBU, Azara
2. Prof. Manoranjan Kalita, Director, SOT
3. Mr. P. Joseph, Assistant Director, SOT
4. Dr. Suman Hazari, Advisor, Environment Club
5. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Sen, Associate Advisor, Environment Club
6. Ms. Sakanika Dhar, President, Environment Club
7. Mr. S. Sagar, Student Coordinator
8. Other executive members of the Environment Club
Following discussions, the team outlined the following activities for SHS 2024:
 Awareness Program: "Creating a Swachha Culture: Awareness Programme for a
Cleaner University" for the university community on September 24, 2024.
 School Engagement and Activities: Interaction and activities with local school
children on October 24, 2024.
 University Cleanliness Drive: A dedicated cleanup drive on campus on October 26,
2024.
Volunteer Engagement
Approximately 30 student volunteers from Assam Don Bosco University actively
participated, each fulfilling specific roles in the planning, organization, and execution of
these events. Their involvement was instrumental in achieving the campaign’s objectives

3. Event Execution
3.1 Awareness Program for University Communities titled “Creating a
Swachha Culture: Awareness Programme for a Cleaner University” on
September 24th, 2024
An awareness initiative called “Creating a Swachha Culture: Awareness Programme for a
Cleaner University” was organized. This program focused on promoting cleanliness,
environmental stewardship, and resource conservation within the university. Along with
encouraging core values of behavior, responsibility, and collective action, several specific
topics were emphasized:
 Switching off lights and fans to save energy: Advocating for mindful energy
consumption.
 Using dustbins for spitting: Fostering hygiene and cleanliness.
 Refraining from drawing on walls: Preserving the campus's aesthetics and
cleanliness.
 Segregating waste materials: Highlighting the importance of recycling and proper
disposal.
 Turning off water taps: Aiming to prevent water wastage.
 One tree for one chance to save the earth: Promoting tree planting and
environmental conservation.
 Land restoration initiatives: Supporting efforts to rehabilitate and restore degraded
land.
 Avoiding littering: Encouraging a clean and litter-free campus.
These initiatives aimed to cultivate a sustainable and clean campus environment, encouraging
each individual to contribute responsibly.

3.2 Engagement with local school children and organization of activities on
October 24th, 2024
An interactive session took place with students from Dharapur Higher Secondary School in
Guwahati, aimed at promoting awareness about cleanliness and hygiene. This phase featured
a painting competition centered on the theme “Clean India, Green India” to engage younger
participants and raise awareness. A total of 80 students from classes 6, 7, and 8 showcased
their creativity by expressing their thoughts on cleanliness through vibrant artworks. To
motivate and recognize their efforts, prizes were awarded to the winners. This initiative not
only encouraged artistic expression but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards
maintaining a clean environment among the children.

3.3 Cleanup drive on campus on October 26, 2024.


On October 26, 2024, student volunteers organized a cleanliness drive at the institution to
address issues of untidiness. It was observed that some students had drawn sketches on the
walls and discarded chewing gum on the floors, which contributed to an unclean
environment. In response, volunteers took proactive steps to clean the affected areas,
carefully removing the wall sketches and cleaning the floors. In response, the volunteers

actively cleaned the affected areas, demonstrating the importance of maintaining a clean and
hygienic space. Through their actions, they encouraged students to rethink their behavior and
realize the negative impact of such practices. This initiative aimed to instill a sense of
responsibility and promote cleanliness within the university community.

A cleanliness drive was held in the University Park area to promote awareness about
maintaining cleanliness among students. Volunteers gathered to pick up litter, sweep
pathways and clear away any debris scattered in the park. The initiative aimed to highlight
the importance of keeping shared spaces clean and encourage students to adopt responsible
habits. Through active participation, students were reminded of the collective effort needed to
preserve the beauty and hygiene of the park. The event successfully raised awareness and
fostered a sense of accountability in maintaining a clean campus environment.

4. Conclusion
The Swachhta Hi Seva (SHS) Campaign 2024 at Assam Don Bosco University was a
successful and impactful initiative that promoted a sense of responsibility and community
engagement. From awareness programmes to cleanliness campaigns, the campaign has
effectively highlighted the importance of cleanliness, sustainable practises and environmental
responsibility. Involving students and local school children, the campaign encouraged active
participation and promoted a clean and responsible campus culture. The commitment of the
volunteers and the enthusiastic involvement of the participants demonstrated a strong
commitment to the goals of the SHS campaign and left a lasting impression on the university
community.
