1. Boron has two naturally occuring isotopes. Find the percent abundance of B-10 and B-11 given the
isotopic mass of 10.0129 amu and 11.0093 amu accordingly.

Givern: Average Atomic Mass of Boron - 10.10

Boron - 10 = 10.0129 amu
Boron - 11 = 11.0093 amu

10.10 = (10.0129) (x) + (11.0093) (I - x)

10.10 = 10.0129x + 11.0093 - 11.0093x
10.10 - 11.0093 = 10.0129x - 11.0093x
-0.9093 = -0.9964
-0.9964 -0.9964
0.9126 = x
0.9126 x 100 = 91.26% for B -10
1 - 0.9126 = 8.74% for B - 11

Therefore, the natural abundances of boron isotopes are approximately: 91.26% for B - 10 and 8.74%
for B - 11.

2. Bromine has two naturally occurring isotopes. Bromine-79 has a mass of 78.918 amu and is 50.69%
abundant. Find the percent abundance of Bromine-81 with a mass of 80.9163 amu, if the atomic mass
is amu.
Given: Average Atomic Mass of Bromine = 79.904
Bromine - 79 = 78.918 amu, 50.69%
Bromine - 81 = 80.9163 amu

79.904 = (78.918) (x) + (80.9163) (I - x)

79.904 = 78.918x + 80.9163 - 80.9163x
79.904 - 80.9163 = 78.918x - 80.9163x
-1.0123 = -1.9983
-1.9983 -1.9983
100 - 50.69 = 49.31% for Br - 81

Therefore, the natural abundance of bromine isotopes are approximately: 49.3% for Bromine - 81.

3. The average atomic mass of copper is 63.55 amu. If the only two isotopes of copper have masses of
62.94 amu and 64.93 amu, what are the percentages of each?
Given: Average Atomic Mass of Copper = 63.55
Copper - 63 = 62.94 amu
Copper - 65 = 64.93 amu

63.55 = (62.94) (x) + (64.93) (I - x)

63.55 = 62.94x + 64.93 - 64.93x
63.55 - 64.93 = 62.94x - 64.93x
-1.38 = -1.99
-1.99 -1.99
0.6935 = x
0.6935 x 100 = 69.35% for Cu - 63
1 - 0.6935 = 30.65% for Cu - 65

Therefore, the natural abundance of bromine isotopes are approximately: 69.35% for Cu - 63 and
30.65% for Cu - 65.
4. Antimony has two naturally occurring isotopes. The mass of antimony- 121 is 120.904 amu and the
mass of antimony-123 is 122.904 amu. Using the average mass from the periodic table, calculate the
abundance of each isotope. Sb = 121.76 amu
Given: Average Atomic Mass of Sb = 121.76
Antimony- 121 = 120.904 amu
Antimony- 123 = 122.904 amu

121.76 = (120.904) (x) + (122.904) (I - x)

121.76 = 120.904x + 122.904 - 122.904x
121.76 - 122.904 = 120.904x - 122.904x
-1.14 = -2
-2 -2
0.572 = x
0.572 x 100 = 57.2% for antimony - 121
1 - 0.572 = 42.8 % for antimony-123

Therefore, the natural abundance of bromine isotopes are approximately: 57.2% for antimony - 121
and 42.8 % for antimony-123.

5. What is the mass in grams of 4.30 moles of Aluminum? Al = 26.98 g/mol

Given: Al = 26.98 g/mol
4.30 moles
= (4.30 moles) (26.98 g/mol)
= 116.014 g
Therefore, the mass of Al in 4.30 moles is 116.014 g.

6. Average atomic weight of boron is 10.10 and boron has two isotopes, B-10 and B-11. The
percentage abundance of B-10 is?
Given: Average atomic weight of boron is 10.10
B - 10 = 10
B - 11 = 11
10.10 = (10) (x) + (11) (I - x)
10.10 = 10x + 11 - 11x
10.10 - 11 = 10x - 11x
-0.9 = -1
-1 -1
0.9 = x
0.9 x 100 = 90% for B-10

Therefore, the natural abundance of boron isotopes are approximately: 90% for B-10

7. Indium (atomic wt. 114.82) has two naturally occurring isotopes, one form has isotopic mass
114.9041 and abundance of 93.72%. What is the isotopic mass of the other isotope?
Given: Average atomic weight of Indium = 114.82
In - 115 = 114.9041, 93.72%
107.68
114.82 = (114.9041 × 93.72) + (M2 x 6.28)
100
(114.9041 × 0.9372) + (M2 x 0.0628) = 114.82
M2 = 114.82 - 107.609
0.0628
= 114.82
8. How many moles in 124.5 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl)? Na = 22.99, Cl = 35.45
Given: NaCl = 124.5 grams
Na = 22.99
Cl = 35.45
22.99 + 35.45 = 58.44 g
124.5 grams = ( 1 mol ) = 2.13 mol
58.44 g
Therefore, the number of moles in 124.5 g of NaCI is 2.13 mol
