Type 1) Sprag Clutch (NMT.01) Type 2) Centrifugal Lift-off Sprags (NHB) Type 3) Roller Ramp Clutch (NR)

NMTG Brand of Free Wheel Clutches are specially constructed with self and positive locking form
of Sprags, popularly called CLS, that are retained in position by means of precisely manufactured
torsion springs. In case of Roller Ramps and Sprag Clutches compression springs are used.
When any one race of the holdback unit rotates w.r.t. other race in one direction, the Sprags get
automatically released because of change in the direction of locking and the unit performs as a Free
wheel.

When the same race rotates in the opposite direction the other race gets locked positively as
Sprags generate wedging effect and the unit transmits torque in that direction of rotation. The Free
Wheel Clutch in Roller-Ramp system, Rollers positively lock one race to transmit torque in one
direction of rotation & makes totally free (released) in the opposite direction of rotation. This Free
Wheel Clutch often provides the simplest solutions at lowest cost for many applications in
comparison to Clutches designed with the help of Ratchet and Pawl.

For these basic applications clutches with specific designs of Sprags called Centrifugal Lift-off
Sprags - CLS, Indexing Cams and Roller Ramp are available offering a wide range of selection and
option for Unidirectional Drives.

2 Applications of Free Wheel Clutches

NMTG Brand Free Wheel Clutches are expertly designed mechanical devices with specific
characteristics.

Ø There is no contact between the Inner and Outer Race in one direction of rotation, here the Free
Wheel Clutch is in Free Wheel mode of operation,

Ø But positively here is contact between the Inner and Outer Race in other direction of rotation, in
this case the device transmits high torque,

Therefore the these Free Wheel-one way-Clutches are practically used as

1) Hold Back / Back-Stop Device

2) Overrunning Clutch and
3) Indexing Clutch

For these basic applications clutches with specific designs of Sprags called Centrifugal Lift-off

and option for Unidirectional Drives.

2.1) Hold Back / Back-Stop Device

Clutch used for Backstopping function prevents reverse rotation when input drive is discontinued or
there is sudden power supply failure that would otherwise cause serious damage to the driven
equipment / machinery. This function is simply achieved by anchoring one (Outer) race of the
Clutch so that the other race is free to rotate in required direction but immediately gets locked in
reverse direction.
The normal working mode of Hold Back is as Free Wheel, it means locking (torque transmission) is
performed at zero speed. The immediate engagement of the clamping elements ensures the
required high operating safety.

Normally, the Outer Race or the Flange of Outer Race or the Torque Arm of the Sprag / Roller Clutch
is firmly fixed / bolted to the stationary part of the equipment frame and the Inner Race is mounted
on the main Drive Shaft and rotates freely. Typical applications are in Gear Box Drives, Motors,
Pumps, Cranes etc where driven shaft runs at low speed.

In a loaded Inclined Conveyor & Bucket Elevator, the Hold Back is used to prevent moving in
reverse direction, when the drive system is stopped or fails. It means when the Conveyor, Bucket
Elevator or any rotating device tries to run in the opposite direction the clutch positively prevents
this motion. Therefore, in such applications the Clutch is often called a "Back-Stop" or "Hold Back"
Clutch.

2.2) Overrunning Clutch

Free Wheel Clutch is also used as Overrunning Clutch. In this mode clutch engages machine /
equipment / their parts and automatically interrupts/disengages from their contacts as soon as the
driven part of the Overrunning Clutch is rotating faster than the driving part.
In case of Overrunning Clutches the engagement takes place in the driving operation (torque
transmission), where as in Free Wheel operation the torque transmission between the Inner and
Outer Races is interrupted. In driving operation the speeds of the Inner & Outer Races are equal,
where as in Free Wheel operation they are different - i.e. speed of Free Wheel (driven member) is
higher than that of drive shaft.

2.3) Indexing Clutch

The Indexing Free Wheel Clutch transmits a back and forth motion into a stepped rotation (index
feed) The NMTG Indexing Free Wheel Clutch works precisely and quietly and enables an infinitely
adjustable setting of the feed.

Caution: NMTG Brands of Free Wheel Clutches are also used as Safety Devices / Elements in many
industries hence it is very important that Installation and Operating Instructions are carefully read and strictly
followed by the user.

4 Design and Construction of Hold Back NHB (NMTG's Versatile Product)
The Hold Back Device is designed with Centrifugal Lift off Sprag - CLS where the shaft overruns at high speed
(drive speed 1440 rpm). This Hold Back has each CLS fitted with preloaded Torsion Spring that are supported
between Cage Plates (Guide Plates) and finally firmly mounted on Inner Race.

The driving torque is transmitted to Outer Race through CLS. It is basically a friction dependent device i.e. only
works in presence of friction between contact surfaces of Sprags with relative races. The friction creates a wedging effect
with loaded element to transmit torsion load while maintaining Strut Angle. During transmission of torsion torque
deflection of contacts occur which is adequately controlled by preload of Torsion Spring.

When the Lift-off Speed is reached the CLS get automatically disengaged completely and rotate contact free,
means this situation creates clearance between upper tip of the Sprag and contact surface of Outer Race (see
figure.2) eliminating total friction or absolute no friction and wear at contact surfaces which impart long life to Hold
Back.
When the speed of Inner Race decrease to such an extent that the effect of the centrifugal force on the Sprag is less
than that of the preloaded Torsion Spring force, at that time the Sprag again rest on the Outer Race contact surface a n d
the Free Wheel are ready to lock position (see figure-1)

Caution : Screws with material grade 12.9 should not be used because of their low breaking elongation.

D Requirements of fitment for Safe Operation

The bore of the Inner Race is normally controlled within tolerance limits of ISO H7. In this case the tolerance
limits of fitting shaft must be controlled within h6 or j6.

Hold back is mounted at inner diameter of outer race D1 H7 of hold back so spigot OD must be kept within
h6 or j6.

The Driving Key must have press fit with the shaft and push fit with Inner Race, otherwise the Inner Race key
way may get deformed.

Caution:

a) The transmittable torque are combined with the permissible concentricity / eccentricity between the shaft
and Outer Raceway in accordance with Figure 8.

b) Compliance with the allowable eccentricities must be guaranteed by the executed mounting and
centering the Free Wheel Clutch parts.

Also appropriate protection against pollution and humidity must be provided.

Depending on the operating conditions either an oil or grease lubrication is applied (see also section H
“Maintenance” and “Lubricants).

E Installation

E.1 Mounting

Make sure that axial position of the Inner Race with the Free Wheel Cage under cultivation will be such that a
minimum clearance of a = min. 2 mm (see Fig. 6) is present in each face of Sprag Cage and end of the
centering Collar. The same applies to the opposite side also.

E1.1 Keep the fastening screws for the Outer Race ready,

E1.2 The direction of machine or system rotation must be determined prior to Free Wheel installation. Mark
this direction with an arrow on the shaft to which the Inner Race of the Free Wheel is to be mounted,

E1.3 Ensure that the direction of Free Wheel matches with that of marked on the shaft, clean the mounting
surface and the cleaning spigot for the Outer race on the housing or the intermediate flange carefully
and clean the shaft area for the Inner race,

E1.4 Unpack the NMTG Brand Free Wheel Clutch and remove the packaging but without pulling out the
Outer Ring. Apply a coat of acid free, ageing resistant - a light machine oil to all components of the
NMTG Brand Free Wheel Clutch to protect it against corrosion.

E1.5 For easier mounting, the NMTG Brand Free Wheel Clutch or the Inner Race with Cage Assembly only,
may be heated to max. 1000C,

E1.6 If using sealing compound between fastening surface and face of the Outer Race ensure that it is
applied sparingly and evenly, Caution: Surplus sealing material is not to be allowed to enter the Sprag
Cage,

E1.7 Push the NMTG Brand Free Wheel Clutch carefully on to the shaft until it is located against the shaft
shoulder or the distance ring. Caution: When mounting the Inner race on to the shaft, pressure should
only be exerted on the face of the Inner race – never apply force to the Sprag cage or use a hammer.

E1.8 Continue the axial fastening of the Inner Race by fitting a Circlip - as illustrated in the Fig. 6. Never
reduce the thickness of Circlip for forcible fitting in available gap .Other constructional options for axial
protection are possible. Caution: When a Free Wheel Clutch is used as a Back–Stop, the drive must
not be started in the direction opposite the Free Wheeling direction of the Free Wheel, otherwise the
Free Wheel Clutch may be destroyed!

E1.9 Assemble the Outer Race on to the Centering Spigot and screw it to the fastening surface together with
the front cover, if applicable. Depending on the operating conditions either an oil or grease lubrication is
applied (see also section H “Maintenance” and “Lubricants).

E.2 Pull off the Outer Race

E2.1 In case of Type S3 Free Wheel Clutch, for any assembly reason, the Outer Race must be
separated from the Inner Race along with Cage Assembly e.g. for grease lubrication (see Section
H “Maintenance” and “Lubricants) and act as follow;

E2.2 Stop removing the Outer Race if a minimum of 20 mm of the sprags are left in the bore (see Fig. 7).
Secure the Outer Race in this position,

E2.3 Set the trammel (Item 1) around the Sprags and tighten them,

E2.4 Now the Outer race is free to remove it easily,

E2.5 For a unit with two cages you have to practice these steps twice.

Fig.7
Note:

1) For any reason, if the Outer Race is axially shifted out of Cage Assembly without using the trammel
stretchable band like an O-ring then keep on slowly turning the Outer Race till it is completely pulled out.

2) Now, in this situation the Sprags are in engaged position due to spring force hence it is not possible to
reassemble the Outer Race on to the Cage Assembly unless a trammel or a suitable stretchable
band like an O-ring is used.

3) This method can also be used for the Type S1 or S2. Use instead of the trammel, a suitable stretchable
band like an O-ring or the like.

F Check the Eccentricity (Run-out i.e. Total Indicator Reading -TIR)

The most reliable check of existing run-out between Shaft and Outer Race can only be carried out when both
the Outer and Inner Race parts are mounted. The cover should not be assembled at this point but Outer Race
must be drawn along its whole mounting face against the fastening surface with the fastening screws.

There are several methods for checking run-out, one of them is described here.

F.1 Fasten a dial gauge to the Inner Race and locate the sensor of the dial gauge against the bore of the
Outer Race (point J in Fig. 8).

F.2 Slowly turn the shaft 3600 and determine the maximum run-out (TIR) whist ensuring (particularly in the
case of taper or sleeve bearing applications) that the bearing play is included in the run-out.

F.3 Compare this run-out value with the permissible value given in the documents of the machine.

Alternative the maximum radial run-out (TIR) can be determined by measuring the distance between the (1)
Inner Race and (2) Outer Race. The measurement has to be done all 900 at the circumference with an internal
measuring device e.g. “Inside Dial Indicator”. The largest difference of the result of measurement lying in a
line is the run-out (TIR).

G Verification of fitment prior to commissioning

Before operating the Free Wheel one has to make sure that the shaft can be easily and evenly
turned in Free Wheeling direction.

H Maintenance for Long and Trouble Free Life

When Free Wheeling with speed above the Lift-off speed, the Free Wheel clutch operates in maintenance
free mode and do not require any lubrication but protection against corrosion should be provided.

For the starting and stopping operation (running time max. 20sec. below Lift-off speed) splash lubrication of
the races is sufficient. As long as oil mist is existing it is OK.

If not then oil will reach the Outer race, a grease lubrication is to carry as follows;

Thickness of film approx. 0.5mm with a mineral lithium-based lubrication of NLGI class 000 to 2 with a max.
base viscosity of 42 mm2/sec. at 400 C (low temperature grease such as “LBZ” lubricant by Mobil or “ISOFLEX
LDS 18 spezial by Kluber).

Caution: To much grease will lead to malfunction of the Free Wheel Clutch!!

With frequent or constant operation below the Lift-off speed (pl. contact NMTG India directly with NMTG part
No. if available or see specific order documentation) either an oil bath or an oil supply between Cage and O u t e r
Race is necessary. The corresponding volume flow can be found in Table 1. However, the service life under
such conditions is limited!

NMTG Mechtrans Techniques Pvt. Ltd.

NMTG is an engineering set up situated at Naroda, GIDC, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, since last two and half decades
and engaged in manufacturing of high precision products in modern CNC environment. These products are
mainly used for the purpose of drive transmission and are available in wide range of sizes and applications.
Depending upon specific applications there are four verities of products namely (1) Free Wheel – one way
–Clutches used as Hold Back / Back-stop, Overrunning Clutch and Indexing Clutch (2) Keyless Transmission
Elements (3) Tensioner Nut & Bolts and (4) Cam follower / Track Rollers.

Keyless Transmission Elements: These are available in mainly two verities (1) Locking Assembly and (2) Shrink
Disks and are offered in different types. These are versatile in nature, can with stand high fatigue stresses under
alternating tensional stresses. These are most suitable and economical for fixing on shaft or on hub or between
shaft and hub offering easy mounting and removal, wear free operation, perfect alignment and adjustable also.
For mounting no key way is necessary in shaft and hub as they are shrunk fit and thus minimizes notch effect.
Widely used for drive applications like Shaft mounted gear arrangement, Gear Wheels, Chain Sprocket, Lever,
Cams, Break Drums and at many other places.

Tensioner Nuts & Bolts: These units offer great benefit in application where ordinary hexagonal nuts on stud or
bolt require very high tightening force for full tightening. For this unit very low tightening force (torque) is required
for each clamping screws provided, with the help of standard torque wrench, to achieve the same or better results.
Hence they are widely used for general mechanical fitment in heavy and medium duty equipment. Loosening
under full load conditions is eliminated as there is no play between male and female threads of multiple Tensioner
Bolts and Nuts assembly. However, standard torque Wrench has to be used for tightening purpose.

Cam Followers / Stud type Track Rollers: Standard as well as eccentric designs of Stud and Cage Guide are
available ready to fit condition for applications like heavy loads and medium speeds.

All NMTG Products are versatile in nature, offer great economy is use hence extensively used in almost
all industries and thus rule the market.

Application of products
Multifarious - especially Medium
& Heavy Projects - all Industries.
