AIM

TO BUILD AN "ELECTROMAGNETIC TRAIN,"

UTILIZING UNINSULATED COPPER WIRE, A
BATTERY, AND POWERFUL MAGNETS

1
INTRODUCTION

The electromagnetic train, commonly known as maglev,

leverages electromagnetic forces for both levitation and
propulsion, drastically reducing friction and allowing for
higher speeds than traditional trains. This investigatory
project explores the principles of electromagnetism,
develops a functional model, and assesses the advantages
of maglev technology. By demonstrating increased
efficiency and lower maintenance costs, the project
underscores the potential of electromagnetic trains as a
sustainable and innovative solution to modern urban
transportation challenges.

2
MATERIALS
REQUIRED

1. Uninsulated copper wire

2. Battery
3. Powerful magnet
4. Dowel Rod
5. Wire cutters

3
THEORY

When the battery is placed inside the coil and

both magnets are touching the coil it
produces a closed circuit between the two
magnets and the current flows. As the
current flows through the conductive copper
wire a magnetic field is created around the
wire. This magnetic field interacts with the
magnetic field created by the neodymium
magnets in a way that repels the magnets on
one end and attracts the magnet on the other
pushing the battery through the coil.As the
train moves, the process repeats in the
section of the track between the two
magnets, making it run until the battery has
no power left.

4
PROCEDURE

.1..Get a battery. A battery is used for this project

2.. Find a rod or tube that is just a little larger in diameter

than the diameter of the battery. A dowel rod of
approximately 12mm diameter is perfect if using an AAA
battery

3. Take your bare copper wire, and wind it tightly around the
rod, tube or pipe .

4. Choose the right magnets - make sure you use magnets

that have a slightly larger diameter than the battery used.

5. Place one magnet on either end of the battery. You need

to make sure both north poles, or both south poles, are
facing each other when the magnets are attached to the
battery.
.
6. Slide the battery inside your coil and watch it a tightly
bound coil. Take care to slide each coil together as you
wind.

5
PRINCIPLE OF
WORKING

A voltage source, a current (I) is provided along the

wire. The current, which is going through this
circularly looped wire, results in a constant, (ideally)
uniform magnetic field (B) through the centre of the
coil of wire. The resultant magnetic field lines are
shown by the blue lines 2. Thus, an electromagnet is
created. The strength of the magnetic field (B=unI) is
proportional to both the number of turns of wire per
unit length (n=N/L) and the strength of the current
passing through. Ampere's Right Hand Rule, illustrates
that a current carrying wire generates a magnetic field
around the wire. Point the thumb of your right hand in
the direction of current along a wire then curl your
fingers inward. The direction of your curled fingers
gives the direction of the magnetic field. The magnetic
field radiates outward in a circle, with the magnetic
field strength decreasing as you go farther from the
current carrying wire. This information can be used to
confirm the magnetic field lines for a solenoid
depicted in Figure]. Simply, follow along the curve of
the solenoid with your thumb and confirm that the
direction of the magnetic field will always be through
the centre of the solenoid.
6
The magnets have been carefully
aligned so the force on both magnets
points in the same direction, and the
result is that the magnets and battery
move. But as they move, the magnetic
field moves with them and you get a
constant motion.If you flipped round
the two magnets at the ends of the
battery the battery and magnets would
move in the reverse direction. If you
flipped only one magnet the two
magnets would then be pulling/
pushing in opposite directions and the
battery wouldn't move.

7
CONCLUSION

In this project, the neodymium magnets on the ends of the

battery create a bar magnet with a north pole and a
south pole. When you put the train inside the coils, it
causes an electrical current to flow through the coppe
wire, which creates a magnetic field in the section of wire
coils right around the train. This magnetic field has its own
north and south poles, which push the train along the
track. The train will only run one direction because of its
magnetic poles.

8
PRECAUTIONS

1. The pipe, rod or tube used to wind the

copper wire must have a slightly larger
diameter than the battery.
2. The magnets used must have
the same or a slightly larger diameter than

9
SOURCES OF ERROR

1. The same poles of the magnets on .

either side of the battery may not be facing
each .
2. Regular magnets may be used instead of
neodymium magnets which won't work as
