ABSTRACT

Orthogonal Frequency division multiplexing OFDM has emerged has a key enabler in high
speed digital communication. It has found its applications in LTE, WLANs, WiMax systems
etc. It is by far better that Frequency Division MultiplECing (FDM) in terms of spectral
efficiency. One of the major drawbacks of OFDM systems though is its high Peak to Average
Power Ratio (PAPR). Due to high values of PAPR, it becomes impossible to use high power
amplifiers in the piecewise linear region which causes non-linear distortion in the signal at
the receiving end. Non linear distortions result in high bit error rate or BER of the system.
This in turn degrades the Quality of Service (QoS) of the system. Hence to mitigate such
detrimental effects in OFDM, PAPR reduction techniques are used to reduce high value of
PAPR. Out of several PAPR reduction techniques, Selective Mapping is one of the most
potent techniques with high PAPR reduction capability. In the proposed technique, a
weighted selective mapping technique is proposed with windowed weighting unction used for
peak cancellation. In the proposed work, original OFDM, clopping, selective mapping and
the weighted selective mapping techniques are analyzed using the Complementary
Cumulative Distribution Function (CCDF). It has been shown that the proposed system
outperforms the conventional Selective Mapping by far. The proposed system attains a PAPR
of 13 dB lesser than the conventional SLM at a PAPR of 10-1 and 10-2, which is a substantial
reduction in PAPR.

1.1 Overview:

Figure 1.1: Block diagram of digital communication system [19]

As proven in fig 2.1, the Analog to digital converter (A/D) converts the analog signal to
virtual signal or within the shape of statistics circulation, then source encoding is used to
compress the digital facts up to an quantity such that it can be obtained with none loss. Then,
the statistics image is acquired from source encoder that is passed thru a channel encoder
which adds the redundant bits to the records collection for reliable conversation or to make
the records transmission robust to disturbances which are gift within the transmission
channel. Now, the facts series at the output of the channel encoder is passed through the
virtual modulator which outputs the sign waveform. The modulation can be binary or m-
array. In Binary modulation, bit 1 and zero makes use of awesome waveform and m-array
modulation (m=2^n), makes use of m number of distinct waveform and this modulated
waveform is transmitted. In the channel, the modulated signal is stricken by the addition of
random noise that's probabilistic in nature.

at the receiver aspect, the demodulator demodulates the acquired sign into binary collection
and coupled filter out is also used at receiver side to growth SNR. Now the output of the
demodulator is surpassed thru the channel decoder to recovers information collection. This

1
facts series is fed to the supply decoder to reconstruct the signal which was truely transmitted
by means of source. Then that sign is converted to analog signal and received by the person.
